Hello Everyone, In sentencing decisions, it is vital to acknowledge the impact of the legal system on the behavioral and mental health development of individuals. Arredondo (2003) emphasizes the importance of understanding the basics of both typical and atypical child development to carefully consider mental health issues. This knowledge is invaluable for decision-makers within the juvenile justice system. Insufficient understanding can lead to negative consequences, such as indiscriminate sanctioning, which may harm a young person's development. Arredondo (2003) also observes that most juveniles who face court proceedings come from disordered family or community environments. Moreover, young individuals often are unaware of the world's unpredictability, dangers, and harsh realities. If a youth has not been exposed to reliable and fair adult role models, they may doubt their very existence. The environment and caregivers play a crucial role in shaping adolescents' expectations of consistent and reliable caregiving (Arredondo, 2003). Proper development necessitates that children are provided with structure, limitations, and boundaries. Consequently, inconsistent responses to a child's behavior can lead to abnormal development and delinquency. In my work with youth in the juvenile court system, I've observed that interventions frequently lack customization to the individual's needs. Instead, a one-size-fits-all approach is often applied. I believe that creating interventions that are humane, constructive, suitable for the developmental stage, and effective for non-violent, non-sociopathic offenders is essential. Arredondo (2003) supports this view, suggesting that community-based sanctions are more effective than institutionalization, as the latter can lead to juveniles becoming accustomed to prison life instead of preparing for reintegration into the community. Incarcerated minors are hindered from experiencing vital developmental stages due to the enforcement of punitive measures. It is crucial to consider if the regulations surrounding the application of these sanctions are suitable for their developmental stage, considering the social, familial, and individual factors that contribute to the growth of youth. Additionally, the needs of specific populations such as females, transgender individuals, those with mental illnesses, and people with disabilities must be considered (Arredondo, 2003). It is imperative for policymakers to strive towards the implementation of interventions and practices that enhance the prospects for successful outcomes. Arredondo, D. E. (2003).
