Bowman, Dorothy L. Espelage, and Jennifer Greif Green. b. What year was this study published? The study was published in 2016. c. What is the name of the journal in which this study was published? The name of the journal in which this study was published is Journal of Child & Family Studies 2. Introduction (15 Points): The introduction (sometimes called the literature review) is where the authors discuss the research they used as a basis for their research. Write a 250-word summary of what they found from reviewing the literature in preparation for their research. Do not use direct quotes. Write your summary in your own words. The introduction in this research study describes what they are looking for in their study. In this case, they are defining what bullying is and its effect on first year college students who have been previously bullied. They discuss how bullying has a direct affect to depression and anxiety in adulthood and how bullied youth have a hard time adjusting to college life. This also affects their performance in school. They found that although bullying does have a negative effect on mental health, many students did not meet the criteria for depression or anxiety. Because of this they want to investigate the factors that protect against effects of bullying. They found that perceived social support has a positive effect of mental health on children and emerging adults. They investigated two theories about social support to better understand its role in how it protects psychological stress. One theory suggest that social support helps one cope with stress and the other suggests

that it has a direct effect on the person and automatically makes them less stressed. In the end, they hypothesize that students with a history of bullying with greater social support will have better mental health than those who don’t have support, which supports the first theory, and they also hypothesize that students with greater social support will have better mental health, no matter if they had been bullied, which supports the second theory. They hope to promote social support structures in colleges and address the fact that college counselling centers have limited resources to help those students in need. 3. Method: Method is where the authors describe how they did their research. They tell about the participants and tell the procedures they used including any tools (scales) they used for the study. a. Participants (5 Points): Describe the participants of the study. How many participants were in the study? What was the breakdown between male and female? What was the ethnic breakdown of the participants? The participants of this study were first-year, first-semester college student from four large U.S universities. The final fall sample was 1,474 students with 65.2% female and a response rate of 21%. There were 436 first-year students who completed both fall and spring surveys. The race/ethnicity breakdown was as follows: 50.4% White/Caucasian, 25.8% Asian, 15.7% Hispanic, 3.7% Black/African American, and 4.4% other. b. Measures (5 Points): The researchers used 4 measurement tools (scales). List them. The four measurement tools were California Bully-Victimization Scale, Depression, Anxiety, and Perceived Social Support. 4.
