1.What principles determine the dignity accorded to human beings in today’s society? Reflect on how the poor and vulnerable of our global community are treated? The dignity accorded to human beings in today's society is determined by principles such as equality, respect for fundamental human rights, and recognition of individual worth regardless of socio-economic status, race, gender, or other characteristics. Unfortunately, the poor and vulnerable in our global community are often marginalized and mistreated due to systemic inequalities, lack of access to resources, and discrimination. Efforts to address these issues include advocating for social justice, implementing equitable policies, and promoting empathy and understanding. 2. There are those who clean up after us – custodians, garbage collectors, dishwashers, etc. Do they receive the same respect as a university professor or a broker on Wall Street? Why or why not? Do you respect them? If so, how? The respect accorded to individuals in different professions can vary based on societal perceptions and cultural values. While professions like university professors or brokers on Wall Street may be traditionally esteemed, those who work in roles such as custodians, garbage collectors, or dishwashers may not always receive the same level of respect. This discrepancy often stems from societal biases and perceptions about the value of certain occupations. However, it's essential to recognize the vital contributions that all individuals make to society and to treat everyone with dignity and respect regardless of their profession. 3. In the film, Chávez says that farmworker wages are unjust. What do you believe is a just wage in today’s society? Do all people receive just wages? If someone were to propose that no one in the United States should make more than three times as much as anyone else, how would you respond? Now take the minimum wage and multiply it by three. Do you believe this would be a fair wage for those at the top of the income scale? Why or why not? The concept of a just wage is subjective and can vary depending on factors such as cost of living, societal norms, and economic conditions. In today's society, disparities in wages exist, with some individuals earning significantly more than others. While some argue for income equality as a measure of fairness, implementing policies such as capping income or mandating specific wage ratios may face challenges in practicality and feasibility. Determining a fair wage involves considering factors such as job responsibilities, skills required, and contributions to the economy. Not all people receive just wages. Income inequality persists, with many individuals earning wages insufficient to meet basic needs. Proposing a limit where no one earns more than three times as much as anyone else could address some inequality but may face practical challenges and overlook varying job responsibilities. Multiplying the minimum wage by three for those at the top wouldn't necessarily be fair. The minimum wage often falls below the living wage, and simply tripling it may not accurately
reflect the value of higher-paying positions or the complexities of their roles. Comprehensive solutions, like progressive taxation, would better address income inequality. 4. What would you do if you were denied the right to live where you wished, or entry into a school or job, because of your race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, religion or disability? If denied the right to live where I wished or entry into a school or job due to discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, sexual preference, religion, or disability, I would advocate for my rights through legal channels, community activism, and education. Discrimination based on these factors is unjust and undermines the principles of equality and human dignity. Taking action to challenge discriminatory practices and promote equality is essential for fostering a more inclusive and just society. 5. Describe the qualities that made Chávez an effective leader. What makes someone a good leader? What role do leaders play in shaping our communities and our society? Why do youth make some of the most powerful leaders in our society? César Chávez possessed qualities such as resilience, empathy, determination, and a commitment to nonviolent activism, which made him an effective leader. Good leaders inspire and empower others, promote justice and equality, and work towards positive social change. Leaders play a crucial role in shaping communities and society by setting examples, advocating for marginalized groups, and mobilizing collective action. Youth often make powerful leaders due to their passion, idealism, and ability to connect with contemporary issues, bringing fresh perspectives and energy to social movements. 6. What were some of the obstacles that Chávez and the movement encountered during his early years? How did these experiences shape who he became and his work for justice? What challenges did the farmworkers face? Think of a challenge that you have faced. How did it affect your life? How did you handle this challenge? Some obstacles that César Chávez and the farmworkers movement faced during their early years included opposition from powerful agricultural interests, legal challenges, and internal divisions within the labor movement. These experiences shaped Chávez's determination and commitment to nonviolent activism, influencing his strategies for achieving justice. The farmworkers faced challenges such as low wages, unsafe working conditions, and lack of labor rights. Personally, I have faced challenges such as overcoming academic setbacks. This experience taught me resilience, the importance of perseverance, and seeking support when needed. I addressed the challenge by developing effective study habits and seeking guidance from mentors and peers. Though this challenge continues, I have learned how to handle it better. 7. When Chávez began to organize farmworkers in the grape boycott, he was depicted as a troublemaker. Why are those who challenge unjust systems or governments depicted as troublemakers? Reflect on a gospel passage where Jesus was depicted as a rabble-rouser? Did this label prevent him from promoting justice and defending the rights of the oppressed? What does it mean to you to be a troublemaker for justice? Those who challenge unjust systems or governments are often depicted as troublemakers because they disrupt established power structures and norms. In the gospel, Jesus was depicted as a
