1 Critical Reflection Paper SOCWORK 1AA3 Mariha Irfan Naqi 400381345 October 14, 2022 Prof. Ann Fudge Schormans TA Maimuna Khan Feedback yes
2 My personal definition of help would be the ability to provide a service out of generosity which is usually with the intent of being free of cost. I believe that my definition of help is derived from seeing it being given around me all the time. From all hardship individuals conquer in life, regardless of backgrounds, from time to time you are allowed to seek help in all aspects. From my experiences, asking for help was often neglected due to being perceived as weak and harmful to the fragile egos of those around me. A social issue I would like to discuss would be the archetypes women face daily. Archetypes refer to “A statement, pattern of behavior, prototype, "first" form, or a main model that other statements, patterns of behavior, and objects copy, emulate, or "merge" into” (Wikimedia Foundation, 2022). When speaking about helping women face these inescapable labels, we have collectively as a society over the years broken several barriers such as the gender wage gap, and the glass-ceiling effect, etc. An example of this would be a woman being labelled as an “unfit mother” due to personal issues, or a celebrity being labelled as a “diva” when she tries to protect her peace by choosing silence. The social issue of women being stigmatized with archetypes becomes an issue of the ‘labelling theory’ which leads to them internalizing these wrongful labels. In respect to helping women overcome these issues, I have educated myself over the years and started my implementations at home. Not using hurtful words and teaching my younger family members to do the same. The podcast “Archetypes” hosted by Duchess of Sussex, Meghan Markle, strives to use her voice by bringing women of the mainstream media on it, delving into “where we investigate, dissect, and subvert the labels that try to hold women back” (Archetypes with Meghan, 2022). I would consider this podcast to be uplifting in nature. It promotes the idea that women are not the labels that have been attached to them. For example, in the episode titled
3 “The Misconception of Ambition with Serena Williams” Serena speaks about her infamous tennis career and how she was said to have been a ‘negligent mother’ and constant racist attacks throughout the years. Williams goes on to mention in the podcast, ““So that year I had Olympia, and I had a match the next day and that night, she fell out of her highchair and broke her wrist. And she was on my watch” (Bailey, 2022). Proceeding to explain how society constantly would like her to internalize the ideology that a woman cannot have children and balance a fulltime, professional career. Reflecting on the podcast, I believe that this is a step forward as women on a global scale will feel good about themselves and feel liberated to do as they like without the fear of an archetype defining them. Another issue I would like to speak upon would be the type of help given to seniors, and how social workers, nurses and so forth can highly impact how the elderly either move upwards in social mobility, or downwards. Often, we hear about senior care homes cases tackle the inevitable fight between the impatient helper and the helpless older citizen. We must learn to distinguish the wage factor must not have an impact on the quality of one’s assistance. This leads to dangerous and unsettling environments for the elderly, resulting in years of silence abuse. To further explain this, “Elder abuse is all-encompassing term that describes many forms of mistreatment: physical, emotional, and financial, such as misuse of power of attorney. It also includes neglect and isolation, which have been made worse by COVID-19. Close contacts and even family members can be sources of abuse, experts say, citing examples such as: a woman forced by her family to live in the garage, with the windows darkened; a landlord who found an elderly tenant alone in bed, covered in feces; a family who claims $250,000 was stolen from their grandmother” (Stone, 2021).
