ENVSOCTY 1HA3 – Society, Culture & Environment (2021-22 – Fall) Tutorial Activity #3 – Environmental Studies & Geographic Information: Plastic Pollution QUESTIONS & ANSWERS Full Name: Mariha Irfan Naqi Student Number: 400381345 Instructions: To complete the questions below, you will need to visit Our World in Data to download your data file and then create your map in ArcGIS Online. In order to do so, you will need to visit the following websites: https://ourworldindata.org/ https://mcmaster.maps.arcgis.com/ Make sure to save this document to your computer (insure it is saved as a .doc or .docx file or else it may not be properly read in Avenue to Learn/Turn-it-In). Due: 11:59 PM on the day of YOUR Tutorial #8 – Environmental Studies & Geographic Information: Plastic Pollution to the appropriate Avenue to Learn drop-box ( Assignments > Tutorial Activity #3 – Environmental Studies & Geographic Information: Plastic Pollution) Assigned Plastic Pollution data set: “Share of plastic waste that is inadequately managed, 2010” Q1. Briefly explain (in your own words) the steps of creating a basic map on ArcGIS Online using an imported data set. The steps to creating a basic map include first importing a link from a reputable site that contains a map that indicates a specificality about an area of concern. Once that is done, you then must retrieve the downloaded file on ArcGIS and add it. Then you must choose add layer to file, and since we had chosen a plastic pollution data set, when choosing an attribution to show, you must choose the adequately managed option. Then you must select the different drawing styles an go on from there. And enable the cluster points to be rather large to make it easier to view. Q2. Based on the map you have created, what are some of the general patterns that you observe? I can observe that there are mainly larger areas of inadequately managed plastic in many parts throughout Africa, as well as a trend of lots of this plastic being seen in regions throughout Europe and Asia. However, in some areas such as Guatemala and Cuba it seems to be inadequately managed, but not as severely. Lastly, Australia, Canada, America, and so on do have an adequate way of managing plastic. Q3. Explain why you think these general patterns exist. Think about differences between different countries (i.e. less developed and more developed, etc.) I think these general patterns exist due to the awareness raised over the years in more modernised and globalised countries, as well rewarding communities in these more modernised countries such as returning cans or bottles and getting something in return as an incentive.
Q4. What can we do to reduce our plastic pollution? And what are some of the constraints we face in terms of trying to solve this problem? Our dependency on plastic continues to rise as well as overconsumption of one-use plastics (e.g.; Styrofoam cups or disposable plates). This can be reduced by introducing alternatives that are easy to use convenient such as metal straws. As well as introducing a price to pay for plastic bags at grocery stores or convenience to encourage bringing your own eco-friendly, reusable bags. One of the biggest constraints when trying to reduce plastic pollution is recycling properly. There are certain things that over the years are not acceptable to be recycled such as shredded paper or frozen food containers. Q5. Take a screen capture of the map that you created using ArcGIS Online and insert it below.
