1 Final Assignment CGSC 2001 C Winter 2024 Directions: Answer ALL questions below. You must work on this assignment independently. The final deadline for this assignment is April 10 th , 2024. You must upload your assignment to Bright Space. Assignments not submitted through Bright Space will not be graded. Do not email your final assignment. When you submit your assignment, you will receive a notification from Bright Space confirming your submission. If you do not receive a confirmation email, it means your assignment was not submitted, so be sure to check. Ensure you are submitting the correct file—this is your responsibility. You risk receiving a 0 if the incorrect or a blank file is uploaded. You can resubmit if necessary before the deadline—Bright Space will only keep your most recent submission. Assignments are due no later than 11:59PM EST on April 10 th , 2024. Asynchronous class time is provided to you from April 2 nd -April 10 th (Unit 5). Therefore, extensions will NOT be granted unless there is an extreme and serious circumstance, where verifiable documentation will need to be provided. Your assignment should follow APA formatting (e.g., title page, reference list, etc.). Only Word and PDF documents accepted. Longer answer: Answer BOTH questions below. Your answer to EACH question should be 3-3.5 pages double- spaced, Times New Roman 12-point font (or similar). Your assignment should not exceed 7 pages in total, not including a title page and reference list. Each question is worth 45 points with the following grading criteria: Understanding and application of the course material: /18 Plausibility of answer: /20 Writing is clear and succinct: /7 1. What are some pros and cons of studying consciousness from a first-person/subjective perspective? Be sure to discuss and explain at least two different first-person perspectives. After discussing the pros and cons, explain whether, and to what degree, first-person approaches should be included in studying consciousness. Be sure to include at least two strong arguments for your view. 2. As discussed throughout the course, is no agreed upon definition of consciousness. Given what we have discussed in the course thus far, how do you define consciousness? Given your definition, are you a dualist or materialist? Which form of dualism or materialism do you hold? Why? Discuss and explain, making reference to at least two of the following topics: evolution and consciousness, personal identity, first-person approaches to
2 consciousness, the paranormal and consciousness, and/or altered states of consciousness. You can also make reference to other topics discussed in the course, but you must cover at least two of the topics listed above. You will also be evaluated on following APA formatting, which includes citations, reference list, spacing, etc. You should thoroughly review the APA guide posted on Bright Space. Academic writing (e.g., grammar, spelling) will also be evaluated. Collectively, this is worth 10 marks.
