QOTW What does accountability mean to you? What would it mean to hold the Canadian state accountable for human rights violations, like those of Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people? Accountability to me can be defined as the process that follows an occurrence. It's how you react and accept responsibility for the outcomes. The public may strive to hold all governments responsible for the actions they take or do not take to solve the violence epidemic. However, as stated in the National Inquiry's evidence, the state is unable to ensure the protection of all 2SLGBTQQIA and Indigenous women and girls. However there has been movements to create solutions for these acts of violence. The Canadian government created the Federal Pathway, a collection of pledges for federal departments and agencies to assist systemic change to address the tragedy of missing and murdered Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQI+ persons, as one of the National Action Plan's components. Discussion: What has happened after the National Inquiry? After the National Inquiry, On June 3, 2021, the federal government unveiled a national action plan dubbed a "pathway" to end violence against Indigenous women, girls, and 2SLGBTQQIA peoples. This date marks the second anniversary of the publication of the final report of the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls. How should Indigenous women and their communities proceed with their efforts to end violence against Indigenous women and girls? Do we continue to engage in state sponsored anti-violence responses? Yes, I think we should continue to engage in state sponsored anti- violence responses. I believe some ways to proceed are by following the ONWA. Native American families of missing and murdered women and girls can get assistance from ONWA, they have been making and continue to create more programs and systems working towards ending this violence for good. Another option is Joining them on the Executive Committee (EC) to End Violence Against Indigenous Women are other provincial Indigenous groups. Why is it important to view violence against Indigenous women and girls through a sociological lens? I believe it is important to view violence against Indigenous woman and girls through a sociological lens because this approach finds the roots of these problems and creates solutions to prevent this from happening in the future.
Reflection: During week 10 we discussed the Background on Missing and Murdered Indigenous women and girls (MMIWG) and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people, as well as the Bourgeois (2018) and the National Inquiry into MMIWG and 2SLGBTQQIA+ people. What stood out to me the most during this week’s lecture was the Genocide history of Canada. For Indigenous peoples, the discriminatory laws, policies, and practices of the current administration have proven to be just as lethal as the historical genocidal atrocities. Theft of children into provincial foster care has replaced the theft of children into residential schools. What was once scalping bounties is now Starlight tours (deaths in police custody). Racism for Indigenous peoples in Canada is more than just accepting stereotyped taunts and name-calling, getting rejected from jobs, or having government representatives demonize them in the media—racism is killing our people. Page 53. Discovering just how deadly these issues have been for the indigenous people hurt me to learn. I wish our government would do more to create a safer society for indigenous people, we need more actions taken towards creating a safer environment for everyone. I really enjoyed this week’s lecture as usual, I learned a lot and it is always nice to gain a deeper understanding of what is going on in our society.
