Reflection #1 Reflection #1 Movie: Tomboy by Céline Sciamma Vanshika Singh Department of Sociology, University of British Columbia SOCI 320: Theories of Family and Kinship Dr. Rafael Wainer April 12 2023 1 Word Count: 353
Reflection #1 The main character, Laure, in the charming, succinct, and warm-hearted short film by Celine Sciamma, Tomboy, is a 10-year-old girl who moves to a new town with her family, which also includes her younger sister and her parents, who are expecting their third child. Laure adopts the alias "Mikael" and pretends to be a boy in order to play games with the other children in the new town. Being of prepubescent age, Mikael decides to investigate his gender identity, which is characterized by gender ambiguity (Ebert, n.d.). Due to his unconventional fashion sense and short hair, nobody suspects Mikael’s lies, and he is able to keep this ruse up throughout the summer. When Mikael's younger sister discovers his deception, she not only approves of it, but also participates in it. She even claims that "a big brother is superior to a big sister anyway" and is supportive of her brother. Tomboy is about how children experiment with gender nonconformity without being forced to conform by society. Despite Mikael's mother's strong suspicions that her son is exploring his gender identity over the summer, she chose to remain silent until the first day of school. His mother speaks to him calmly and lovingly, explaining that it is fine if he wants to dress differently and express himself differently; however, he must be honest with others and admit that he is biologically a girl and that he has been lying all summer. She fully supports Mikael's desire to express himself in unconventional ways. As the primary socializer, a family must provide the necessary support for a child to explore gender nonconformity, and Mikael is fortunate to have a family who supports him on his journey. Many children who struggle with gender nonconformity are left with no one to turn to for help, which can be a difficult situation for children, and this film may give them a sense of belongingness. Viewing this film would likely enhance one's comprehension of transgender and gender non-conforming individuals, while also eliciting a notable sense of compassion towards the enduring experiences and emotions that have shaped their existence (Dry, 2023). 2 Word Count: 353
