The Problem/Target Population Those who are murdered at the very first attempt when being approached by law enforcement in the community are significantly more likely to have mental illness. Furthermore, due to behavioral problems, homelessness, and poverty, those with concurrent disorder are more likely to be reported by police (Fuller et al., 2015). Due to these issues and the general lack of understanding and awareness of mental illness, many people with mental illness are in contact the police. 03/27/2024 2
Proposed Change Gun violence not only affect family members but the community as a whole and this must change. The proposed program will include a specialized mental health intervention team, tactics to defuse the situation, and educating law enforcement regarding mental illness. This plan will ensure individuals with a mental illness is treated properly, whether that means giving them medical/psychiatric care, hospitalizing them, or if necessary, arresting and detaining them along with a psychiatric evaluation. 03/27/2024 3
