Diana Hejtmanek EAD 501 Topic 2 - Professional Dispositions Self-Evaluation January 10, 2024 Professional Dispositions Self-Evaluation/Model Code of Ethics for Educators As a veteran teacher, I have always known that educators are held to a high standard when it comes to our ethics and how we carry ourselves both in the classroom and out in the world. I never knew that we had our own code of ethics. I think this is a vital piece of important information for all educators and staff members of all schools. Reading the Code of Ethics for Educators was, I believe, an important first step in becoming the best leader I can be. After much thought and consideration, I have found these three areas within the “Model Code of Ethics for Educators” that I want to work on and build up for when I become a leader on my campus. The first area is under Principle I: Responsibility to the Profession in Section C, which states that educators need to promote and help advance the profession of education not only within the school setting and system but also within the community. As a veteran educator, this is an area that I don’t often think about needed to take part in. I felt since I was just a teacher that it wasn’t my job to either recruit new teachers or talk to my students about becoming teachers. But now that I want to become a principal and leader in my district, this is a super important part of the education system. I also feel that within recent years, many educators have forgotten the importance of getting the next generation of teachers ready to be in the classroom, and this is something I want to change. My second and third areas of growth both fall under Principle 4: Responsibility to the School Community. My second area of growth is under Section A which had to deal with appropriate and effective relationships with parents and/or guardians. I have always struggled with communicating with parents/guardians of my students. When I started teaching, I felt that I was too young for my students' parents/guardians to take me serious and respect what I had to say. Because of this I always been afraid of afraid of communicating with parents/guardians. I know this is a fear that I will need to overcome to be an effective leader with my school and district. Communicating with parents/guardians is a huge part of a school leader's job and this is a major area of growth for me. Without proper communication between parents/guardians and the school major issues will occur, and I want to prevent that from happening. My third and final area of growth is becoming an advocate for school policies and laws that benefit our students, families, schools, and communities. This is under Section C in Principle IV. I believe that educators, school leaders, and families should be the ones who help make the policies and laws for schools and not just politicians. Educators should be fighting for what is right by our students and their families. I know that I don’t do this enough now, and as a leader I want to set an example for not only my staff but also my students. I want to show them that I care about them and their school so much that I want to bring change to the school policies and law. As an educator, I believe there are a lot of different areas of growth when it comes to our code of ethics. As a leader, it is my job to set an example of following these ethics to the best of my ability and growing in my areas of weakness.
