Realism Vignette: Bananas Sex education in the public school setting has been debated for many years. Some educators agree that it is needed, while others disagree that it has no place in the educational setting. However, there has been a dramatic increase in teen pregnancy and sexual activity for many years. Regardless of our viewpoints, realist educators recognize that schools are not all-powerful institutions but instead that the effectiveness of school depends on other agencies such as the family, performing their responsibilities well. (Gutek, 2014, p. 60). Additionally, Gutek states that a teacher communicates knowledge to students, motivated by a love of truth, and love of persons. (2014, p. 61). Educators must help students understand the risks and help find a resolution by educating students to help set a downward trend. As I analyzed the chairperson’s recommendations, my initial reaction was to agree with her regarding only showing the video demonstration of how to properly use a condom. However, after a careful analysis of the situation, I realize that it is my responsibility to ensure students are aware of the risks when participating in sexual activity. I feel it would be best practice to incorporate both the idealistic and realist viewpoints concerning this situation. While I feel that educators should promote abstinence in students I also realize that not every student will follow through the common practice that I was raised upon. Therefore, it is paramount that we teach safe sex practices to all of our seventh and eighth-grade students. Because of the reality of our world, we need to ensure students understand the seriousness of sexually transmitted diseases and how each disease affects them. While we want to encourage students to remain abstinent we must also understand that we must teach them how to apply safe sex practices, such as using protection from disease and properly obtaining consent from their partner. Students must understand how to properly gain consent from their partner because many teenagers do not realize the seriousness of gaining consent.
