Chapter 1.4 Why Study Sociology? 1. Summarize the 'doll test.' What landmark Supreme Court case did this 'doll test' contribute to? - The ‘doll test’ was a part of the landmark Brown vs. the Board of Education case that contributed to the Supreme Court’s conclusion that separate schools for whites and blacks but equal, were damaging to students and that separate facilities are unequal. 2. Summarize how sociologist Peter Berger describes the “aha" moment in sociological research. - Peter Berger describes the “aha” moment in sociological research when sociological theory becomes applicable and understood. He mentions how there is an obviousness and simplicity when it comes to some sociological investigations. The “aha” moment is when you’re able to recognize that things familiar to you might not be so familiar anymore. 3. What sort of career are you interested in? How could studying sociology help you in this career? - The career I am most interested in is teaching in elementary schools. Sociology will help me in this career as it’s already helping me with my day-to-day job which is an after-school program specialist. Sociology has helped me understand how to navigate certain situations when it comes to kids of various ages, dealing with parents whether it’s negative or positive, and learning how to work with the school as it involves, talking with our youths' teachers, counselors, social workers, and many others. Sociology can help you when it comes to asking the right
questions, knowing what to say and when, and how to approach certain individuals or situations.
