Change Maker Challenge #5: Addressing SDG 1 (no poverty) in Perth I am a passionate advocate for the call to end the homeless crisis in Perth that is negatively impacting people’s lives and the healthcare system. Localized Issue in Perth – Homelessness Homelessness is defined by ‘having no home or place of permanent residency’ (Homelessness Australia, 2023). There are many factors have contributed to the homelessness crisis in Perth such as lack of affordable housing, domestic violence, unemployment, and drug/alcohol abuse (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2023). Family and domestic violence is the number one key driver of homelessness in WA accounting for 41% of those who end up sleeping rough (Anglican Church of Perth, 2021). My perspective and connection to this issue: As I have lived and worked my whole life in Perth, I have never felt the city at night is a place compared to most other cities in the world its known as a fun, vibrant happy place for its citizens. In a situation like this which is extremely hard to change overnight and takes much greater effort than oneself, I may be biased to only focusing on the Perth CBD and forget rural areas. It is important to remember the homeless problem stretches far out of the CBD and is even a greater problem in rural areas where access to water and adequate housing is limited. Addressing some Prompts & Provocations: Module 5 Some Core questions to ask myself: *Why is this an issue in Perth? Homelessness impacts an individual’s freedoms and rights, increases crime, impacts availability of health resources and increases taxes for working citizens. * What policy changes are needed for change? Engaging stakeholders which include the State/ local governments, private companies, residents, and community leaders need to come together regularly to adapt to the ever- evolving homelessness problem in Perth by educating the public to ensure a new generation of educated and opportunistic young people to drive this crisis out of Perth and replace the city with vibrance.
* Who are the stakeholders? State/Local Government, residents, businesses, Traditional Owners. What are things that a region can influence and control? As my proposal centres on eliminating homelessness, economic factors influenced by government spending are within regional control. Government spending on essential services like education, health and social protection have increased worldwide and will be a critical step to prevent people falling into poverty in the first place (United Nations, 2023). Identifying Structural Problems: Addressing the homelessness crisis in Perth goes beyond just cyclical downturns. My approach includes digging into the main reason causes of Homelessness, who is affected and what can be done moving forward. Module 6 Significant Factors Driving Regional Change: SDG 1 (No poverty) in Perth There are many factors have contributed to the homelessness crisis in Perth such as lack of affordable housing, domestic violence, unemployment, and drug/alcohol abuse (Australian Human Rights Commission, 2023). This will be tackled by increasing social protection, this is the key to providing adequate housing for the sleeping rough. For this to happen stakeholders must rally together forming a plan in addressing the crisis. The WA Government has outlined a 10-year plan to conquer homelessness. How can I facilitate change? Volunteering to feed the homeless in Perth through Salvation Army are small ways to create change. Also voicing your opinion to key stakeholders to enact change in policy making.
