The Hernandez Family Case Study Reflection After reaching out to a Women’s Crisis Center in her local area, Mrs. Hernandez and her three children Reuben, Sonia, and Rosa met with a case worker to receive help and/ or escape an abusive living environment. Before reviewing options and realistic goals for the family, the case worker creates a genogram to display the family’s personal and external relationships. The children’s grandparents Alcevedo, Patricia, Ricardo, and Agustina maintain either a strained or distant relationship with the family due to their mutual fear of Mr. Hernandez and have warned or urged Mrs. Hernandez to avoid upsetting him or to seek help. Reuben has a close friend in whom he confides in, and Sonia has a teacher who acts as a supportive figure in her life. 5-year- old Rosa unfortunately does not have any external support, possibly due to her age. When working with this family, the case worker presents some general goals to help guide the family towards a safer and more stable environment. By conducting a thorough assessment of the family’s safety and needs, the case worker could partner with women’s or domestic violence shelters, as well as providing hotlines to more indirect resources. This change could help remove the family from Mr. Hernadez’s violence and become the first step towards stability. The case worker would also seek to ensure that the emotional and/ or physical needs of the family are addressed by partnering with local medical centers, psychological centers, and legal protection orders if needed. By also introducing the family to trauma-informed support groups found within counseling services or mental health professionals, the shared trauma of the family can be recognized and addressed in a meaningful way. Depending on the severity of abuse, the case worker could also bring in the help of law enforcement to coordinate with other individuals involved in the Hernandez case such as Reuben’s friend, Sonia’s teacher, legal
services, and community-based organizations to ensure that their needs are approached holistically. In order to track the Hernandez family’s progress, the case worker can use the SMART method with the family to regularly review the attainment and advancement towards their goals. Any outcome measures related to safety, well-being, and functioning can be identified and monitored by reviewing any reductions in domestic violence incidents. By evaluating Mr. Hernandez’s accountability for his abusive behavior and drinking habits during regular home visits and check-ins, the case worker can get a better feel of how necessary outside intervention is for the family. Case management efforts should also be evaluated for effectiveness in meeting the family's needs, and client feedback should be solicited to gauge satisfaction and identify areas for improvement. In summation, long-term planning, and monitoring of sustained improvements by the case worker are essential to track progress and address ongoing needs.
