Ethical Dilemma Many ethical dilemmas arise from a social worker's relationship with a client. I am going to share one of the ethical dilemmas that I am currently experiencing. I am working with a ten-year-old youth, providing individual therapy. I have been asked to provide weekly updates regarding our sessions to his team, including his parents, DMH workers, attorneys, and educational advocates. My dilemma is my obligation to observe the youth’s confidentiality, which conflicts with the legally mandated responsibility to provide a weekly report regarding our sessions. I have been careful not to share details. Yet, I struggle to put in just enough points to highlight the progress he has made. I have also been put in a situation where his parents and his DMH team disagree on what is in his best interest. His parents continue to advocate for residential treatment despite not meeting that level of care. He has already spent two years in a group home setting and was discharged in August. Since being at home, he has done well despite, as he describes it, “walking on eggshells,” being careful not to engage in behaviors that might send him out of his home. I am also aware of the importance of building an alliance with his parents to support and help challenge their beliefs regarding their child. Therefore, I try to avoid saying or doing something that might rupture an already very tenuous situation. As I previously shared, I have met with his parents weekly to provide coaching and encouragement. Those sessions can be highly frustrating because everything he does is scrutinized and labeled as pathological when much is not only developmentally appropriate but also the impact of trauma early in his life. I have the support of my supervisor in helping me navigate the situation. Despite my frustration, I have navigated these dynamics in a delicate but fair manner.
