In this situation it, it is important to realize that this student of yours feels confident and safe enough to come to you about what is going on. Being told this, understand that it is very important to take this seriously and support your student to the best you can. As an educator, it would be smart to follow the school's policies and procedures for addressing bullying. The first thing I would as an educator in my district would be to document the incident including writing down the details of what happened, the date it happened and what was said/done in this act. Next, I would report the incident to the appropriate school authorities like the principal, school counselors and guidance counselors. Of course, I would support the child with what they need and offer emotional support, letting them know that I am there for them and praise them for coming to an adult about this because bullying is not tolerable and should be handled accordingly. With this going on, its part of the guideline to go ahead and investigate what happened, who exactly was involved and then determine what the actions would be to take. If needed, which most likely would occur, would be taking disciplinary action against the bully as well as figuring out why they did what they did. The problem that happens here is that the student who was doing the bullying, may argue that their Facebook page is protected by the First Amendment along with the right to freedom of speech but of course, just like everything else, there are limitations to that. The Supreme Court has established that certain types of speech such as speech that incites violence or poses a direct threat to others may not be protected. Meaning that ultimately, schools have the authority to regulate speech that disrupts the educational environment or infringes on the rights of others (ACLU, 2023).
