Nuntivacharind 1 1-2 Module One Journal: Defining Terrorism Nuntivacharind, M SNHU 1 JAN 2024 Instructor William Geimano
Nuntivacharind 2 According to FBI website, there are two types of terrorism: International terrorism and Domestic terrorism. International terrorism can be defined as violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups who are inspired by, or associated with, designated foreign terrorist organizations or nations. Domestic terrorism can be defined as violent, criminal acts committed by individuals and/or groups to further ideological goals stemming from domestic influences, such as those of a political, religious, social, racial, or environmental nature. (FBI, 2016). In the other source, The United Kingdom’s Terrorism Act 2000 defines terrorism as “designed seriously to interfere with or seriously to disrupt an electronic system” (CPS, n.d.). These definitions differ in a few ways. In the FBI definition, terrorism is defined as the unlawful use of force or violence against people or property, whereas in the United Kingdom, terrorism is defined as the act of interfering with or disrupting electronic systems. The FBI's definition of terrorism is more accurate in my opinion. A full explanation of terrorism can be found in the FBI's definition, which enables anyone to grasp its concept. It's possible that people from around the world won't be able to grasp the concept of terrorism if we have varied definitions of it. Our ability to identify terrorists may be compromised if our definitions of terrorism differ due to the fact that terrorism isn't considered an illegal activity in all countries. In my opinion, if DHS agencies use different definitions of terrorism, it will cause confusion as to what each agency means by the term. Having a unified definition of terrorism would allow all agencies and levels of justice to avoid what some perceive as terrorism or do not believe to be terrorism. To me, terrorism means using force or threats to intimidate or coerce a civilian population or government for political, social, or ideological ends.
