CAP 220- Self in a Multicultural Society 1 Student name: Cassie Mathis Date: 03/24/2024 Journal # 1 Personal Awareness of Diversity I did not grow up in a deeply religious home but around age 11-12 my newly religious aunt asked if me and my cousin Daniel would attend a Christian rock festival with her church's youth group. Daniel and I attended fun youth group activities in the past and loved the idea of a rock concert, so we were in! Several weeks later the youth group was loaded on a bus and drove to Detroit for an all-day festival. Due to our small 6-month age gap, Daniel and I shared a close bond, spending most of our time together. This meant we told each other our deepest secrets and always looked out for one another. About a year before our Christian rock adventure, Daniel confided in me about being gay and told me all about his school crush. At age 11-12 I knew that "being gay" meant a relationship between two men or two women. That is really all I knew, and I did not think much of it. I supported Daniel no matter what and had no opinion on the matter. Fast forward a year, we arrive at the festival, hardly able to contain our excitement. The festival was held in a large theatre with hundreds of attendees. A couple public figures and pastors spoke on stage in between bands playing. We were having a blast, taking in the crazy lights, loud music, and big crowds. Halfway through the evening a pastor took the stage and began speaking into the microphone about the dangers of teenagers going down the wrong path and living sinful lives. He stressed the importance of maintaining a Christian lifestyle and Christian values. Some point during his speech, he addressed the topic of same-gender relationships. He made mention of a godly marriage being between man and woman, how same sex marriage/relations are sinful, ungodly, and punished in the afterlife. As people in the crowd clapped in agreement, I remember looking at Daniel, not knowing how to feel. I knew the basic difference between heterosexual and gay people, but I never knew the hate and dislike attached to others for their sexuality. At this point it never dawned on me or crossed my mind. It made no sense to me. As I looked at Daniel, tears in his eyes, he repeatedly told me he did not
CAP 220- Self in a Multicultural Society 2 Student name: Cassie Mathis Date: 03/24/2024 want to be gay, he was scared to burn in hell. This was the first time I saw someone experience feelings of shame, unacceptance, fear of who they are, made to feel less than. It was the first time but far from the last. That day I developed a sadness that never left me. A realization that some people are less accepted than others. Most Relevant Concepts from Units I found great relevance in addressing the difference between race, ethnicity, and culture. I think this is helpful information everyone should know. I learned so much from the Race and Ethnicity module. I knew there was a difference between our race, ethnicity, and culture but I now have a clear understanding of those differences. Race is manly based on physical appearance. Ethnicity is based on location/origin and shared cultures. Culture is rooted in shared beliefs, religion, social practices, and lifestyles. I also really enjoyed Bronfenbrenner's Social-Ecological Model. It was interesting to learn all the different dynamics that impact an individual. It really sheds light on the many factors that contribute and affect our past, present and future. Thes impacts play a role in the opportunities and experiences we have in life. Race Related Issues Racism and colorism within the criminal justice system is a large and widely recognized race issue. People of color are more likely to be searched by the police, receive unfair treatment by the police, receive little to no help from the police, face harsher punishments for crimes committed and even be killed by the police. The racism within the police force and judicial system is hard to ignore. For several years, half the hate crimes committed were crimes against Black people, yet the incarceration rate in Black communities is far greater than any other race. The only way to move further away from stereotyping and institutional discrimination is to gain a better understanding of those that look different
