In a society with high levels of access to technology and artificial intelligence (AI), the world of academics faces new challenges – cheating culture. Today, college students utilize a number of methods to successfully cheat, an issue that even Southern New Hampshire University experiences. From article spinning to Course Hero to ChatGPT, the methods of cheating are endless. Merton’s Anomie Theory can be defined as “ a state of normlessness, disorder, or confusion in a society when the standard norms and values are weak or unclear” (Nickerson, 2021); however, can simply be defined as terms set by society as acceptable and unacceptable or social norms (Nickerson, 2021). Over the past decade, several studies have taken place to examine the correlation between access to technology, cheating culture, and the motivations, rationalizations, attitudes, and contextual factors of those who cheat in college. One in particular examined how often college level students would cheat in Louisianna, Utah, and South Dakota (Josien & Broderick, 2013). Through the administration of a 16 scenario questionnaire, researchers found that cheating is done often, with 1 in 3 students admitting they had cheated while in college, and multiple methods, like the ones mentioned above, are used to cheat (Josien & Broderick, 2013).
