University of South Florida College of Behavioral and Community Sciences School of Social Work Integrative Seminar – SOW 4510 Field Placement Situation of the Week Form Name: Date: Situation/Issue Topic: Stolen Valor/Demo for new software 1.Describe a situation/issue of interest or concern that occurred in your field placement this week and how it relates to topics studied in seminar class/readings? One situation was a community partner of Turning Points that spent lots of time, money and resources to help a veteran who turned out to be someone lying about serving when they never did. The other situation was when I was the only representative that logged in for a sales demo for new software that the county might purchase. My FI had to travel out of town and no one else was available. So I as an intern had to show up and take the lead as a representative of the county. The first situation applies more to chapter 6 and 7 while the second kind of applies to chapter 11. Chapter 6 and 7 talk about the context of practice. For example, no one bothered to verify the persons service before they spent time and resources helping him. The group and community partners still might have helped, but they wouldn’t have leaned in to his service. The second situation pertained to legal issues a little bit because I am not a county employee and had to make it clear that I was not a decision maker, though I would brief my supervisor on everything that transpired. 2.How and to what extent did the situation/issue have an impact you? How did it make you feel? The first situation upset me a little bit because as a combat veteran, I don’t like the idea of someone lying about being wounded in battle to take advantage of programs designed for the vulnerable veteran population. The second situation made me feel a little awkward because I didn’t really feel qualified to talk to a regional sales manager and programmer about their software product. I did adapt to the situation and try to be a good audience and ask questions I felt would be important to the county. 3.Describe discussions you had about the situation/issue with your Field Instructor/Supervisor and/or anyone else? How did you use the feedback you received? I haven’t had a chance to debrief with my FI yet because they both happened after she had to go out of town. (revised 8/2013)
4.What was the outcome of the situation? The stolen valor perpetrator went into hiding and ghosted everyone who tried to help him. For the software demo, any fall out has yet to be experienced. 5.Looking back on this situation/issue would you have done anything differently? If so, what might you have done and why? I think I handled both situations as professionally as possible. When learning about the stolen valor client I was sure to compartmentalize everything I could in the moment. I talked to my wife about it later in the evening. The software demo situation I also felt I did okay in. I knew I would be attending the meeting so I was sure to research the company a little bit beforehand, so I wasn’t completely unprepared. (revised 8/2013)
