Cultural Identity and Development Reflection There are three roles I play in life: a teacher, a student, and a granddaughter. My family originates from Kingston, Spanish Town Jamaica. I was raised in the U.S as I was born in Bronx, New York. Being one of the few American citizens, it is held with high expectations to provide and support my family. These roles are important for my culture due to the opportunity it holds. In Jamaica my parents could not afford to go to school because of work, so it is important that I fulfil these duties for my family. Being employed and having a consistent income ensures my family has their needs. I started off my employment career as a youth specialist for an afterschool program. After spending 5 years with youth, I made the decision to teach early childhood development to young toddlers. My passion for teaching comes from my experience of how I was taught. My mom has always taught me how to cook, sew clothing, fix household things, and manage the yard. Through her techniques she was my favorite teacher on how precise and soft spoken she is. She taught me things while singing and dancing to music, which is tradition and made it fun to learn. As a teacher, I expand these methods to my young toddlers. They enjoy singing songs and dancing to music while learning. Music is a big part of our culture and a big part of how we define our culture. Through my traditions and teachings, I get the opportunity to share with my students how culture is important and how it reminds others of their roots. Going to school and getting an education is important to my family since they were given no opportunity to. My parents have always told me it is a great blessing to have the opportunity to learn and absorb knowledge. As a student, I ensure that I take getting an education seriously and view it as an achievement for my family and me. Through my full-time studies, and full-time employment as a teacher, I still manage to help my grandmother as much as possible. Due to us living in one household, I am sure to help her with any household duties which include cooking, cleaning, and grocery shopping. Living with her, my role is very important, especially with our traditions. Our traditions include church on Sundays, family gatherings Fridays, and our curry chicken meal Saturdays. Along with my mother we pl,
