Use and cite at least two of this week's resources in your responses to the following questions: Identify one part of your identity where you may have privilege relative to others. How is your privilege demonstrated? Using terms from this week's resources, why is it important to understand that you have privilege in this area? I identify as a woman, and that is part of my identity. Being a woman is a gender identity as well as a social identity. Our awareness of how we relate to particular groups impacts our social identities and how we live our public lives (Categories of Diversity, 2020). One privilege I have is related to my sexual orientation. I believe I can be more open about my sexuality than men. I believe it is less likely that I will be accused of harassment if I make sexual comments or express my interest to any person, male or female, as opposed to a man doing the same thing. My privilege can be demonstrated by my ability to celebrate my sexuality without fear of being condemned or silenced. As sexual orientation and expression are human rights and gender diversity is a reality, it is crucial to recognize that women have privilege when it comes to their sexuality and can be significantly more open about it than men. How is your lack of privilege demonstrated? Using terms from this week's resources, what does this reveal about our society? Being attacked and harassed more frequently than men and usually receiving less money for doing the same work are two drawbacks of identifying as a woman. Crenshaw (2016) gave an example of how little people know about the violence that women experience. Police violence against African-Americans and violence against women are two main topics, but despite this, very little was
known about the extent of police violence experienced by black women. The lack of visibility and recognition of women’s stories and experiences leads to their exclusion from media, policy, and politics (Crenshaw, 2016). The urgency of intersectionality [Video]. TedWomen. www.ted.com/talks/kimberle_crenshaw_the_urgency_of_in tersectionality I found the TED video featuring speaker Kimberlé Crenshaw to be quite interesting as it provided additional insight into the discrimination and gender inequality that women encounter in a variety of contexts and how it impacts their well-being, opportunities, and rights. These days, prejudice and gender inequality are major issues, and our children need to be aware of them. Since this impacts the potential, well-being, and human rights of millions of women and girls worldwide, it is extremely relevant.
