For my final project, I decided to write about eating disorders. Since eating disorders are both a societal and a personal concern, I decided to write about them from a social science perspective. I also chose this topic because body image influences our social and cultural attitudes, as well as our mental and physical health. Social factors influence the emergence or continuation of eating problems. Two types of social impacts include family and interpersonal interactions, as well as media and cultural communication. Sociology and psychology are two social sciences that can be used to explore the issue of eating disorders. These two fields are the most important since they can help us understand both personal and societal factors. The study of human groups and social behavior is known as sociology (UMGC, The Social Sciences). Sociology can offer light on the issue of eating disorders because of how societal messaging and media impact people's perceptions of achievement, attractiveness, and weight. Psychology is the study of human behavior, emotions, and thought processes (UMGC, The Social Sciences). The connection between psychology and eating disorders is in the way that cognitive errors influence people's attitudes toward food, their bodies, and themselves. Psychologists frequently focus on a person's mental and emotional well-being (UMGC, Theories of Self-Development). This leads to an understanding that cognitive distortions might be common among eating problem sufferers. Cognitive distortions are unreasonable or excessive ideas that do not reflect reality. For example, cognitive distortions might have an impact on your emotional thinking. Eating disorders are not just medical conditions; they are also influenced by several social factors such as culture, media, peer pressure, family dynamics, and trauma, thus they will always be a social science problem. An
interdisciplinary approach can help us understand eating disorders by combining different perspectives, approaches, and ideas from other fields. Reference Conerly, T. R., Holmes, K., & Tamang, A. L.
