RUNNING HEAD: RESEARCH PAPER 1 Criminology Interview paper Nilen Peoples Reedley Community College Criminal Justice 5
RESEARCH PAPER 2 Being able to have interviews on communities you like in can help you get insights and information to help you better understand what your community does and how it can be better by just one person that lives in that community’s voice on their view of what goes on. I interviewed Aubry Ayers, a resident of my neighborhood in the north part of Fresno, around Marks and Herndon. I then began the interview and asked a question of how they would feel about law- enforcement responding to their needs and this is something that she responded with by saying, “ I do feel for the most part feel safe and from time to time seeing a sheriff's car drive around the neighborhood. But with the rise in vandalism and suspicious activity in our neighborhood I have felt more on edge and finding myself up in the night to check on certain things outside of the house such as my car,”(Ayers Aubry). With that question and then following up with another question asking if she believes that the department that is serving their communities is providing enough resources to help them. Mrs. Ayers explained how she believes that they are doing a very good job in responding to calls that she has heard about on the community-watch email chat and does believe that more involvement in the community can be possible and making the citizens of the community feel safe. She responds by saying and explaining how our security services do not provide the necessary needs that we need to have fulfilled, such as response time and efficiency. I asked her to elaborate on this and she responded by explaining how, “ She has noticed more officers in higher crime areas unlike her neighborhood but believes that there is almost as much opportunity for crime to occur in the neighborhood she lives in then there are other neighborhoods,” (Aubry Ayers). Listening to these responses from Mrs. Ayres And her suggestion to helping the neighborhood safety, there is some great detail that is left out and although great points are made of it and is now something that needs to be addressed and strategically organized to help better the neighborhood safety and security as well as comfortability of the citizens. After doing some research and noticing some changes in the neighborhood I have come to the consensus that it is
RESEARCH PAPER 3 predominantly a Caucasian neighborhood that consists of 1 elementary school. There are no hospitals nearby and makeup’s of a majority of conservative style government. The economical standpoint today in this community is very wealthy and prospering. With a man-made lake in the center of these houses it is something that brings attention to the hot Fresno days along with the environmental standpoints such as trees, security services, along with a younger lifestyle that raises the cost in price and shows a neighborhood that is recently established and continuing to grow. The use of community relations with the police department in the neighborhood doesn't consist of anything really, in the sense that it is a low crime community that is in a better part of fresno. Living here my whole life i've never seen any police promoting relations take place. Being able to sit down with Officer James Campos gave me lots of insight and information concerning the community and the police department .I asked officer Campos how the department is responding to the community needs and he replied by saying, “ I have talked to thousands of citizens in my 25 years and many stated that the police lack in the area of improving relationships with the community,”(James Campos). After hearing this it seemed they need to be more transparent and accountable. He explained how important transparency is for a positive police-community relationship. A positive note on this with him concluding on this question was and stated saying, “ our department continues to send officers to training on diversity training, bias, and cultural norms. Officers such as myself need to focus own the importance of collaboration, trust, and continue to be visible in the community,”(James Campos). This gave myself as a citizen a lot to think about due to my prior judgments on policing and their involvement in communities. Obviously when it comes to policing your day will never be the same and when asking what the most challenging part of his job was not that but instead, “ dealing with the work related stress, we see things most people don’t see and would not ever want to see. Officers are constantly put in life or death positions and with that adds mental, physical stress, fatigue,
