2 Population and Sample Creswell and Creswell (2018) define a population as all the members or subjects within a particular group that share the characteristics a researcher desires to study, whereas, the sample is a smaller group or subset of the main population of the study. When conducting research there are many different factors to consider when examining the sample of the research study. Researchers can decide to do nonprobability, which includes purposeful sampling, or probability sampling, which includes simple sampling (Nyahunda & Tirivangasi, 2021). The type of sampling is based on the types of information being examined and what the goal of the research is. The main thing to remember when defining population and sample is that population represents all of what is being examined and the sample is a smaller piece of the bigger picture.
