DJA #5 Graphic Organizer Reading Key Skills Assessed: Skills that are assessed in reading are phonemic awareness, phonics, fluency, vocabulary, and comprehension.( Woodin et al., 2014, Reading, pg. 176). Screening Instruments: Many school districts use different types of testing for the reading skills listed above, my school personally uses Renaissance Reader testing to monitor these skills. Screening instruments identify who is at risk, at level, and above level. Diagnostic Assessment: “The data from diagnostic reading instruments can be used to assist in the differentiation and modification of the general education curriculum to better meet the individualized needs of students with exceptionalities.”(wooin et Al., 2014, pg. 178) One type of diagnostic assessment is Informal Reading Information (IRL) which uses graded word list. Progress-Monitoring Assessments: Tools need to be effective for each student. The purpose of progress monitoring is to use the data to adjust and give the best instruction possible. Tools need to be sensitive to changes in the student, educationally meaningful and cost effective. (wooin et Al., 2014, pg. 181) Writing Key Skills Assessed: Key skills that are assessed for writing are Grammar, punctuation, spelling, organization, sentence structure, and relevance to topic. (wooin et Al., 2014, pg. 189) Screening Instruments: Holistic scoring could be used as a screening instrument due to students scoring and ranking their work to others, students that are ranked at the beginning will be the ones that are struggling. (wooin et Al., 2014, pg. 189) Diagnostic Assessment: Curriculum based assessments (CBM) students are given a topic and a specific time limit. The teacher will make expectations clear on what students should be using during their writing time.
Progress-Monitoring Assessments: Portfolio assessments can be used as a progress monitoring assessment, these assessments are a collection of writings you can see the progress they are making. Mathematics Key Skills Assessed: Key skills used in mathematics Fula under these five strands: numbers and operations, algebra, geometry, measurements, and data analysis and probability. Screening Instruments: “Benjamin Clarke and Mark Shinn (2004) used a researcher-designed screening instrument to measure number identification, quantity discrimination, and missing number skills in first-grade students. The skills were measured in the fall and correlated to a spring measure on predictive validity with significant correlations.” (wooin et Al., 2014, pg. 184) Diagnostic Assessment: Teachers should first use a think out loud method then analyze the students responses to understand if there is any misunderstanding. (wooin et Al., 2014, pg. 185) Progress-Monitoring Assessments:when giving these assessments to students the direction need to be stated specifically the same way each time and give each student the same amount of time for each question.
