RESPONDING TO PEERS!!!!!! Share an insight gained from reading their post. Hey Tierney! Thank you for sharing the insight you gained from the Voices of Diversity video. I also resonated with the statement that social workers need to embrace what is different and bridge the gap for individuals with disabilities. I found that statement to be extremely powerful. An insight I was able to gain from your post is that it is not just about providing resources and accommodations for individuals with disabilities, it is also necessary to change societal perceptions to create an inclusive enviroment. This involves advocating for equal treatment and challenging stereotypes for individuals with disabilities. It is unfair and unacceptable to discriminate against or oppress individuals with disabilities by viewing them as inferior or incapable of functioning in our society. Marsiglia et al. (2021) highlights the importance of addressing the mistaken and harmful societal beliefs about mental illness, as these can negatively affect many clients and their families. Another valuable insight I gained is that, as a social worker, it is important to use my client’s strengths to empower them and recognize that they are more than their ability or disability. Additionally, by recognizing impairments as differences rather than problems and creating an inclusive environment and policies, individuals can engage in their lives in a way that best suits them, without their disabled identity or failure to meet society’s expectations to define their experience (Kattari et al., 2017). Once again, thank you for sharing! Ask a probing question that will help you gain a deeper understanding of their response. In your post, you highlighted the importance of embracing differences, advocating for individuals with disabilities, and challenging the historical context of how society has treated them. Considering the discrimination and stigma surrounding individuals with disabilities, what strategies can social workers employ to facilitate a more inclusive and accepting society? Hey Leah! Thank you for sharing your encounter and relating it back to the Voices of Diversity video. Your decision to encourage your son to break the ice and say hi rather than telling him not to stare is a valuable insight. It highlights the importance of creating positive interactions and acknowledging individuals making them feel seen and accepted. Your story is a powerful example of how societal conditioning affects even our well-intentioned actions. As a mom of a six-year-old son, I have realized even more the importance of early education about awareness about disability and inclusivity. It made me reflect that it is necessary to teach our children to acknowledge and accept differences from a young age, which can contribute to a more inclusive and accepting society in the future. This also can serve as a reminder that people of all ages may struggle to understand and relate to what falls outside of their familiar experiences. The stigmatization may stop individuals from seeking the assistance they require, as they fear facing rejection and discrimination (Marsiglia et al., 2021). Therefore, We must work together to create an environment where individuals feel seen and accepted regardless of their differences. Thank you so much! Ask a probing question that will help you gain a deeper understanding of their response. You mentioned that accommodations are often designed without input from people with disabilities, leading to impractical solutions. Kattari et al. (2017) explains that interactions between the physical, social, and emotional resources of older adults and their surroundings can influence their ability to live independently within the community. My question is, how can society ensure that individuals with disabilities have a more meaningful and active role in shaping and designing accommodations to better suit their needs and experiences?
