RESPONDING TO PEERS!!!! Share an insight gained from reading their post. Hey Tierney! I enjoyed reading how you would approach the case with a teenage client, Claire, and how your approach might differ when working with an older client in a similar situation. I agree that a counselor must be culturally competent and provide care that is sensitive to the experiences and needs of clients from different age groups. I liked how you incorporated the use of Piaget’s Cognitive Development Theory and Erikson’s Psychosocial Development Theory in your analysis of the two different cases based on age. It is insightful to see how these theories can be applied to better understand and address the needs and challenges of clients in different age groups. In Claire’s case, your application of Piaget’s theory is important to know as it can help recognize her ability for logical reasoning, which is essential in addressing the difficult emotions surrounding her friend’s suicide. The insight I gained is that by using different theories, I can better understand how to handle situations more effectively considering my client’s age. Thank you for sharing! Ask a probing question that will help you gain a deeper understanding of their response. Marsiglia et al. (2021) states that ageism represents discrimination based on age, where individuals face unfavorable treatment due to their age. Additionally, this form of discrimination can impact individuals in any state of life from childhood to old age (Marsiglia et al., 2021). In the context of ageism, can you explain any strategies you would use to address and overcome these biases in your self-evaluation process to ensure that you provide age-sensitive and culturally competent care to clients of all ages? Share an insight gained from reading their post. Hey Leah! I agree with how you mentioned the significance of acknowledging the potential violation of human rights in older adults and the need to respect their autonomy and cultural context. Cox & Pardasani (2017) states that physiological, social, and economic challenges shifts commonly experienced by older adults can leave them in a vulnerable position where their human rights may be at risk. The insight I learned from your post is the need to adapt my social work approach based on the age group I am working with. You highlighted the importance of tailoring your methods and understanding the challenges associated with teenagers and older adults. For both, you mentioned creating a safe and non-judgmental space, understanding common defense mechanisms, and addressing immediate emotional needs. In my initial post, I expressed feeling comfortable in my ability to engage with older adults facing situations similar to Claire’s. I believed that their life experiences might not pose a significant challenge, as I could find coping mechanisms that have proven effective in the past and apply them to their current situation along with additional help. As you mentioned, when working with older adults, I can
recognize the significance of cultural sensitivity and the need to respect their autonomy. Thank you for sharing! Ask a probing question that will help you gain a deeper understanding of their response. Would you feel more comfortable working with younger clients or older adults, and what factors contribute to your decision? Reference Cox, C., & Pardasani, M. (2017).
