SCI 100 Module Two Activity Template: Scientific Approaches and Questions Instructions Address the following about your chosen scientific news story. Replace the bracketed text below with your responses. Use the module overview and resources for assistance. You do not need to conduct outside research. Part One Identify an approach to scientific research addressed in the chosen news story. The approach to scientific research that is addressed in my chosen news story is a Longitudinal Study combined with Ecological Research. A longitudinal study is a type of research where the data is collected from the same subjects over time. In this case, this research was a decade long study of a giraffe population in the Tarangire region of Tanzania. By studying this giraffe population over this time period, the researchers were able to study the long term effects of climate change and human activity on giraffe survival rates. The study involved ecological research, which deals with the collection of data directly from natural environments. Researchers studied the giraffe population in their natural habitat, which was over a thousand square kilometers, both inside and outside protected areas. This scientific research approach allowed them to observe the interactions between the giraffes, their environment, climate change, and human activities. Part Two Draft two research questions you are interested in asking about the main idea of your news story. Ensure that both of your questions are measurable and focused . What are the relationships between climate change, human activity, and the survival rates of large African species, particularly giraffes, in the Tarangire region of Tanzania? How do different temperatures and seasons influence the survival of adult giraffes and their babies? Climate change: Rising rainfall, not temperatures, threaten giraffe survival. (n.d.).
