1 Case Study Megan R Shields Indiana Wesleyan University HMSR-220-01E May 10, 2023
2 In the case shown in the video: What impact does this client’s culture and ethnicity have? Because her society revolves around drug and alcohol usage, I believe it has had a significant impact on the Client and her case. Because she had the freedom to choose to support her addictions above nourishing her kid, the child was neglected and taken away. Taking a child away from its mother is unnatural, and it causes even more harm. The client wishes to create a stable environment for herself and her children in a world that does not revolve around addiction and use. The Client demonstrated the devotion and work ethic required to succeed in and after recovery, and she only relapsed due to the influence of those around her. We don't know her background or story, but she relapsed when her ex came back into the picture. She may have been influenced by her ex, as she was able to get clean when he was not around. What are the three issues from the NOHS Ethical Standards that apply to this case, and how would you address these with the client: I would approach the client's situation by emphasizing that she is afraid of not seeing her baby again, but I must keep her safe and put her first. I am a required with the responsibility of reporting such situation to do what is right by the child, my client, and my community. Although the position this Client has found themselves in is a difficult one, both as a recovering addict needing a support system to remain clean, but also as a mother desperate to be her child's provider and protector. I would thank her for the courage it took to be open and emphasize that I know first hand how hard this can be, however my primary purpose is to keep my client safe and in a healthy environment at all times while under my care or supervision.
3 The court system may look at other factors or circumstance of the entire situation and may take action how they see fit, but that part is not up to me. The importance of my acknowledging her courage and bravery is the steps it took for her to be honest and respecting herself as an addict and mother to her daughter, and myself about the relapse. As someone myself who will during every waking day of my life, am and will be a recovering addict. Relapsing is common, and sometimes can even be necessary in the most extreme cases to be the wake-up call needed to achieve and maintain sobriety. In the end, the what we are addicted to does not matter or define us at all, for we all have the common demon we fight daily to maintain the same goals in our lives, even if it's for different reasons. As proven by the social worker who did not condemn or make her feel guilty about relapsing, we must not discriminate against clients based on their culture or beliefs. Her success amazed and astounded her. She never made her feel embarrassed. The client insisted that she understood what she was doing was improper. It is not the social worker's responsibility to inform the client if what she did was correct or not.   Explain the importance of confidentiality with this Client: The client's mother's actions could affect their well-being, so it is the social worker's responsibility to keep the client safe. This poor child doesn't even know with her mother because she only had unsupervised visits knowing she relapsed again with or without her partner. This might lead to her drug addiction resuming. Her relapse into drug use might put her daughter in danger. The social worker has no option because she is a mandated reporter and must inform the judge on the matter. This might be a requirement for seeing her daughter if she stays drug and alcohol-free.
