The first teacher in the article discussed one year while teaching kindergarten when one of her students could not focus on class due to the pain of a rotten tooth. The child was new to the classroom and his primary language spoken was Spanish, but he could speak some English. Due to being new to the learning environment, everything didn’t make sense to him. He was very disruptive in class but when the teacher found out the root of the problem, which was the excruciating pain of the rotten tooth she and the school nurse worked together to help find dental care for children in low socio-economic conditions. I love that this teacher didn’t overreact and dismissed the real issue with this poor child. As a teacher, we have to understand that physical, emotional, and mental health affect student learning. According to NSPCC Learning (n.d), all aspects of children’s health and development work together to form their overall well-being. We must observe the whole child and not jump to conclusions when there is challenging behavior because mental issues can affect a child’s cognitive, social, and behavioral well- being.
