Week 2 discussion Changing Lives – SOCW 6002 Explain how one or more aspects of the history of social work relate to the social work population with whom you want to work. The history of social work and its evolution over time has played a significant role in addressing the needs and challenges of the mental health population. Social workers have worked tirelessly to support and empower individuals with mental health conditions by providing access to resources, treatments, and services that promote recovery and improve their overall quality of life. Additionally, social workers have been instrumental in advocating for the rights of mental health patients and destigmatizing mental health issues in society. Social workers advocate the pathways that will give groups of people access to resources, rights, and opportunities and allow them to improve their life experiences (Cox, L. E., Tice, C. J., & Long, D. D. (2019). Through their efforts, social workers have helped to shape the landscape of mental health care and create a more inclusive and supportive environment for individuals with mental health conditions. Explain how the mission of social work aligns with your goals for your social work career. As someone who has always been drawn to the field of social work, I am particularly excited about the prospect of working with individuals who are facing mental health and co-occurring disorders. I believe these individuals are often underserved and overlooked by society, and I am passionate about using my skills and expertise to make a difference in their lives. As a social worker, I hope to offer a range of services to those who need them, from counseling and therapy to assistance with basic needs like housing and food. A holistic approach to social work is essential, acknowledging that mental and physical health are deeply interconnected. By providing comprehensive support to those in need, I aim to help them achieve more excellent stability, resilience, and well-being.
At the same time, I recognize that simply providing services is not enough. As a social worker, I see myself as an advocate for my clients, ensuring they can access the services and resources they need to thrive. Whether it means working with policymakers to improve access to mental health care or building relationships with community organizations to provide additional support, I am committed to doing whatever it takes to impact the lives of those I serve positively.
