Week 1 Discussion Changing Lives 6002 Hi there! I'm excited to share a bit about myself with you. Currently, I work as a crisis counselor in the mental health field, assisting individuals with medication and symptom management. I was born and raised in New York, also known as "The City that Never Sleeps," where I spent most of my formative years. However, in 2020, I moved to Atlanta, where I currently reside. Atlanta is a beautiful state, rich in history and natural wonders. This move has allowed me to experience a different way of life and develop a greater appreciation for nature. Helping others has always been a passion of mine, which led me to pursue a career in human services. I earned my first Master's degree in the Administration of Human Services and have gained significant experience assisting individuals in need. Throughout my career, I have worked in various capacities and with diverse groups of people, including those with disabilities, geriatrics, families in crisis, and marginalized communities. My work has taken me across different sectors, such as healthcare, education, mental health, and social services. I have utilized my skills and expertise to impact the lives of those I serve positively. My journey in the human services field has been fulfilling, which led me to pursue a second Master's in Social Work. I am enthusiastic about continuing to help individuals and communities in need in any way possible. After reviewing the reading materials and videos this week, I have gained a deeper understanding of social work specialties. I have realized that this field has many facets, and it is crucial to explore each to find the population you can best serve. As a crisis counselor, I have learned that social work involves various aspects of providing services, including but not limited to providing housing resources, substance abuse treatment, outpatient care, skills restoration, and resources to support networks within the community.
As a social worker, I have also learned that it is essential to collaborate with other professionals to ensure that clients receive comprehensive care. Therefore, I work closely with other healthcare providers, such as psychologists, psychiatrists, and medical doctors, to provide our clients with optimal care. I have also learned that social work involves advocating for clients' rights and preventing social injustice. As such, I work tirelessly to ensure my clients receive the support they need to lead fulfilling lives. The section on diversity and injustice caught my attention and resonated with me. It highlighted the importance of this topic in any profession that involves interacting with people from diverse cultures and backgrounds. The reflection questions provided self-awareness and promoted self-evaluation and the cultivation of empathy, a necessary quality for success in this field. All in all, it was a thought-provoking and informative piece. Overall, I have come to appreciate the complexity of social work and the importance of exploring the different areas to discover where my skills and passions lie. Cox, L. E., Tice, C. J., & Long, D.
