1 ADOLESCENT INTERVENTION Lisa M Rohrig Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6311: Social Work Practice Research II Dr. Judy Fernandez October 22, 2023
2 Strength-based Therapy I selected strengths-based therapy intervention because these help the adolescent to focus on their own strengths and to build on them. This approach will assist the adolescent in building resilience and to improve their perspective to encourage an increase in their self-confidence to be able to approach daily challenges in the future (Walden University, 2022). Strength-based therapy interventions are especially helpful for use with adolescents because the strength-based therapy approach treats the client as an expert on themselves, client-specific, with treatment plans emerging from the individual more so than from the therapist or from theoretical frameworks that teach how to treat problems. Feedback between the client and the therapist on what’s working and what isn’t is of the utmost importance for this reason (Sussex Publishers). This interventions is helpful with adolescents who (1) have poor self-esteem, (2) emotional issues resulting from an abusive relationship with a parent or partner, (3) serious mental health problems, such as depression, anxiety, and schizophrenia, and (4) families seeking to help relationships (Sussex Publishing). Some challenges or limitations might there be for using the strengths-based therapy intervention are some difficulties, the elimination of symptoms should, in fact, take precedence over the cultivation of strengths. For patients with narcissistic tendencies, the focus on their strengths may make them too comfortable, and less likely to examine the challenges that brought them to seek help in the first place (Sussex Publishers). Next the strengths approach focuses too much on competency and not enough on character. While competence is your skill and knowledge, character is the behavior that demonstrates your values. make sure we don’t over-rotate toward developing our strengths and ignore our weaknesses and gone unchecked or unmonitored, can eventually derail your effectiveness and influences (Jones, 2017).
