Describe two different ways of knowing. Which of these do you rely on and why? Provide an example. Then, describe the danger of professionals relying on just one way of knowing. What might be a consequence of this reliance? Personal knowing and professional knowledge are the two separate categories of knowledge. My intuition and logic serve as the foundation for my personal knowledge. Personal experience is what enables me to identify a challenge I'm facing or the ideas I have about a person or circumstance. Professional knowledge is information that is relevant to a profession and is derived from theory and study. When I need to know how to handle a client or circumstance professionally, I can rely on my professional knowledge. This is because professional knowledge assists me in making a decision or resolving a problem. I tend to rely mostly on professional knowledge while using discernment when using personal knowledge. I do so because everything in social work is not set in stone and depending on the individual situation at hand it could warrant a different approach. The dangers of relying on only one way of knowing makes it hard to be objective and to look at situations and issues from a different perspective. Resources Yegidis, B. L., Weinbach, R.
