1 Reflection on Use of Self Allison Steve Master of Social Work, Walden University SOCW 6500: Field Education I Dr. Latasha Ellis August 4, 2023
2 What types of critical self-review do you use to ensure that you are bringing the best of your professional self to your roles? I review my learning agreement and field tasks every Monday before starting my internship. This is a good reminder of what I need to accomplish and how to accomplish it during the week. I take the advice from my field supervisor during supervision on Friday’s and apply it to the following week. My standards of being professional and wanting to learn as much as I can are high. Include an explanation of the use of self during your field education experience that you may have encountered or that you might encounter. According to Liechty (2018), use of self has been loosely defined and is referred to as professional self. Professional self (use of self) can be defined as self-awareness, critical thinking, empathy, disciplined use of self, and self-organization (Liechty, 2018). An interesting fact I related to in the article stated self-awareness increases throughout the MSW and in the second year found self-awareness related to students’ ability to form a working alliance with less difficult clients (Liechty, 2018). I would agree with that statement because I had to focus on this quarter what I was able to contribute to my field education experience. It was quite uncomfortable stating my strengths and how I applied it to my field work during the last synchronous meeting. However, I realized I did bring my perspective and strengths and am valued as a team member and not an intern. Due to my job as a family-based caseworker I view everything relational and practice strength-based approach with my clients. I found that skill to be useful when working with the students and speaking with staff. For example, during a staff meeting the psychiatrist would meet with the classroom therapists for updates on the students. I would participate by stating every student has experienced some type of trauma or family
3 dysfunction at home. There is nothing wrong with the kids, it is what happened to them and how we can help them grow. I would suggest family-based services for some of the students or suggest increased family sessions with the students. I did become more confident towards the end of my field placement because I was being valued and validated when discussing alternative routes to helping the students. Liechty (2018) states, the ideal use of self revolves around the social worker-client relationship which aligns with the NASW Code of ethics and social work practice. I have found myself to be over empathetic at times when it comes to the students or my clients. I always try to find a piece of myself that I can connect to them even though I will never fully understand what they are going through. During my field placement I have gotten to know the students well and when they are not acting themselves, I know the students to joke with to cheer them up or play a card game, etc. To make a difference one must be invested in their work, especially as a social worker. Client care is a priority to me, and I strive to provide the best services with the staff to these students. Provide a description of potential boundary challenges in your field education experience. I intentionally chose the Partial Program because it targets the population I currently serve at work, and I knew I would not have many barriers. The barriers were more likely to be with staff rather than the students. By this I mean observing staff in the classrooms interact with students and if it was done in a professional manner. I did speak with my field supervisor regarding a classroom staff when it was brought to light the classroom therapist openly stated she did not like a student. She did not say it in front of the student however her body language and nonverbal communication was evident in front of this student. One could imagine being frustrated with this student working with him every day, however this is a school specifically for troubled kids and teens. I observed the classroom therapist’s behavior a few times before
