What are several educational disparities that Hispanic/Latinx students face in school? Identify two approaches to overcome the achievement gap. Despite the presence of Latino population in the United States surpassing 51.9 million since 2011, Latino students continue to face biased experiences that negatively impacts their education long-term. According to Alvarez et al., Latino students face several educational opportunity disparities (opportunity-gap) which results to an achievement-gap in which Latino students show lower test scores and graduation rates nationally (2016). Due to current educational inequalities in the United States, Latino students currently face lack of access to quality education, limited access to inferior and non-academic instruction, poorly equipped and underfunded schools, lack of resources to educate diverse populations, low-teacher retention, and lack of access to pre- school programs due to high costs. In addition, environmental factors such as economic constraints, language barriers, acculturation, prejudice, and discrimination create more educational disparities and therefore a bigger achievement gap for the Latino population. Some approaches that would help to overcome the achievement gap would be offering continuous quality training in cultural relevancy, racial equity, privilege, and identifying personal biases which would help in generating general understanding of the Latino community, create more individualized educational approaches, and challenge biases that can impact the ability to offer necessary support the this population.
