Evidence Based Practice (EBP) in a nutshell is based on acquiring the best attainable research, coupled with a professional’s individual expertise and the respective traits, qualities, and values that individual clients possess. To further abide by this premise, it is essential that practicing social workers uphold the paradigm that has been set and consider as many relevant factors as possible that could enhance service delivery to clients of all backgrounds. That includes our ongoing commitment to understanding and being sensitive to any underlying cultural values, whilst educating ourselves to meet said needs. As practitioners it is imperative that EBP alongside cultural competency, among many other variables influence and guide the day-to-day deliberate practice that will cater to the needs of all of the diverse clients one will interact with. Just like the population that we will serve, practitioners should self-reflect on and recognize that their own backgrounds, upbringing, and life circumstances in a way that will reinforce the need to comprehend and truly understand that just like our clients, we also carry an extensive background that makes up who we are presently. The common elements framework is an ideal approach to support all practicing practitioners because it is in the best interest of the client who may be dealing with multiple co-morbidities at one time. Using the common elements approach it will be much easier to identify the specific approach to meet the needs of the population that is being served at the time. The common elements framework was not intended to replace EBP, but to act as a complementary approach that is intended to be a flexible model that includes a “structed treatment session, ongoing, progress monitoring and reporting, and evidence-informed clinical decision-making that engages clients, clinicians, and other mental health stakeholders…” (Barth et al.,2011). Working with that model will continue to reinforce the distinct work being done, but will also be utilized as factual and concrete data from which practitioners can model to match their clients specific
needs. Barth, (2011) goes on to highlight how this in turn would add knowledge to any social worker when they included, “For practitioners, learning the common elements rather than a diverse collection of treatment manuals may promote mastery and confidence in delivering effective services.” (Barth et al.,2011) That alone coupled with the protocols and model that should be set is the precedent will benefit clients and allow for monitoring, flexibility, and best practice to be introduced and become the norm when engaging any client.
