A. Why we chose this film. -We chose the film “Coach Carter”, directed by Thomas Carter, because it presents many of the issues that are talked about in this class such as racism, deviance, violence, and education in sports. All of these different issues are shown in different ways in this film, and they all are presented with difficult but efficient resolutions to help solve them. This film is an excellent example of the many problems that were brought to light in this sociology of sport class, and it gives people a chance to visually see how the issues transpire and what can be done to help resolve or minimize them. B. Introduction to the presentation -The film "Coach Carter" serves as a powerful lens through which we can examine and analyze the complex sociological issues that we have been exploring in our class discussions. This thought-provoking movie seamlessly intertwines themes of racism, deviance, violence, and the education of sport, highlighting their interconnectedness and impact on individuals and communities. As we dive into our group project, we will draw upon the compelling narratives and experiences portrayed in "Coach Carter" to deepen our understanding of these pressing societal concerns and explore potential avenues for positive change. C. Summary of what the movie entails -The film addresses various sociological issues present in society today, particularly focusing on language and social deviance among youth, as well as the lack of values, respect, and attitude within a sports team. Coach Carter attempts to address these problems by instilling discipline. These issues depicted in the film reflect real-world concerns, where drug use affects athletic performance, bad language leads to tensions and disrespect within teams, and the absence of values and respect has negative consequences for society. The movie aims to address these sociological issues and promote a new order of respect and love in our society. In chapter 5,6, 8 and 14 of our textbook, it talks about some of the issues that were presented in this film such as deviance, racism, education of sport and violence. As stated on page 122 of chapter 5, “deviance occurs when a person’s ideas, traits, or actions are perceived by others to fall outside the normal range of acceptance in a society.” In the film, deviance is one of the biggest issues presented because most of the actions that were shown by the players of the basketball team were seen as unacceptable to Coach Carter and they were completely out of the norm in his opinion.
