Reflective Journals 3 and 4 Migrants, Refugees and Asylum Seekers What challenges did you face this week, or what new insights did you gain? When I was much younger, I vividly remember a big discussion my family had after watching news report about refugees rioting at Villawood Detention Centre. The reactions of both reporters and my family were filled with disgust. The news report questioned the gratitude of these individuals, with my uncle expressing the opinion that if we can all migrate "the right way," why can't they? My uncle also felt that no matter what these refugees should have been grateful for being in Australia because they arrive at no cost, reside for free and receive greater government support than Australian Citizens. As Jacobs (2011) discusses, the media played a role in showing these refugees as problematic, fostering bad views rather than encouraging sympathy and kindness. Where: Where do you see yourself using your new learning from this week in future? During a discussion prompted by the recent Australian Indigenous Voice referendum my uncle again shared his strong opinions on 'migrants.' From this module I have learnt the clear definition of who migrants are. With that knowledge, I encouraged my uncle to critically assess the information he receives. I probed his understanding of the difference between migrants, refugees, and asylum seekers, and realised that he lacked clarity. I explained the challenges asylum seekers face in Australia and urged him to reflect on these facts with empathy, leading to a contemplative silence for the rest of our day together. The Social Model of Disability WHY: Why did you like the lecture/tutorial/reading this week? This week's material was inspirational, it offered me a fresh perspective on how people with disabilities are viewed in the society. The TED talk by Stella shed light on the notion of "inspiration porn," weighing on the tendency to only see disabled people as inspirational. Despite the widespread representation on social media as inspiring individuals, some people with disabilities exhibit intellectual ability. Stella's insights provoked me to appreciate the capabilities of people with disabilities even more. The materials, filled with different videos and varied views on people with disabilities, was truly enjoyable for me. WHAT: What did you find challenging this week? What new insights did you gain? I found the content this week insightful and inspirational, exploring the limitations people with disabilities face in terms of their sexual abilities. The readings this week highlighted a connection between the level of independence in a person with a disability and their sexual fulfilment (Katz & Turner, 2017). While I struggled with understanding this topic, due to not sharing the same experience as a person with disabilities, I learnt that there has been a societal shift over time. Initially people with disabilities were discouraged for their differences but now disabilities are gradually becoming more accepted. The material provided allowed me to gain a deeper understanding of disability and ableism.
