Samantha Jones 008465883 D095 Lindsey Glass 11/02/2023 DKM2- Task 3 Teacher – Student Interactions and Reflections For this assignment I had an interactive classroom simulation. In this simulation I had to give a homework assignment over family. I told the students that the essay should be 1 page typed or 2 pages neatly written. This simulation was a little more challenging in that one of the students Davy had only been in the US for two years with English as a second language and I had one student Savannah that did not want to speak or think about her family at all. One problem that I had was with Savannah and her not wanting to speak about her family and did not want to engage with the class or with me if her family was brought up. I was able to work around this when pointing out that family is not always your genetic or blood family. There are many varieties of family. While Savannah did not want to speak or write about her family she did consider her best friend “Devon” as family and was willing to write about her selected family. I think for the next assignment on family I would make it an assignment on what the students consider to be family and why. I would have them give me examples from their lives to back up their arguments and as proof. Examples of this could include church families, adopted families, sports or athletics families and why they consider these people to be part of their family, while not excluding their biological families such as parents and siblings. One aspect of the simulation that was successful was that the students were able to give me examples of what they would write abut in their papers and that Savannah was able to engage with the lesson when it was pointed out that some families are the people that we chose, such as Devon, to include in our lives. I believe that what I would do differently is to rephrase the assignment as discussed above and that if a student does push back the way that Savannah did I would pull them aside to speak with them rather than speak with them in front of the class the way I did in the simulation where speaking separately with a student like that is not an option. While the assignment is not a “bad” or “wrong” assignment something I will have to remember and keep in mind is that not all families are the same and that family can be a sensitive subject for some students. This can include foster children, students that are in an abusive home situation, students that may live with other family members, or students whose parents are going through a divorce. These are all students that I have to keep in mind and be able to work with on an assignment such as this where talking about families may be a delicate subject.
