Running head: SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 1 The Case of Suhail By: Cristal Astudillo Touro University Worldwide MFT 616 – Society, Culture and Gender: A Multicultural Perspective Dr. Kelsey Railsback April 24, 2023
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 2 Introduction For this signature assignment, I will be covering the case study of Suhail by discussing important factors that are related to race, culture, gender, and religion. I will also talk about how these factors affect the client’s presenting issues and discuss the best interventions or treatment I can provide for the client. I will discuss the assessment of the case, MFT approaches that I can use, legal and ethical considerations, and establish a treatment plan or intervention. There will be room for opinions when concluding the paper.
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 3 Assessment Suhail, a Syrian college student studying in the United States, was referred to be assessed for his diagnosis, Attention-Deficit/Hyperactivity Disorder. Suhail reported he has difficulties in his academic work prior to arriving in the United States. He reported that his struggles with education have greatly affected his family dynamic, resulted in him being the target of criticism by his male family members. Suhail’s mother feels the need to protect him from the harsh criticism. Unknown to the family, Suhail has been struggling with his sexual and gender identity. He reports having homosexual tendencies. Growing up in a society where LBGTQ is not accepted, Suhail has kept this struggle hidden from his family. His family’s primary concern is his ADHD. After an overview of the case, it seems that his personal struggles with his gender and attraction towards the same sex is highlighted, despite his referral to be assessed for his eligibility for accommodations for ADHD. It’s clear that him hiding his identity and wanting to please his own family are the main causes of his issues with schoolwork. Suhail seemed to be overwhelmed and anxious in hiding a part of him due to cultural restrictions, to prevent himself from being ostracized. Diversity Issues As a potential therapist for Suhail, culture, gender, and societal backgrounds must be considered to properly treat him in the therapeutic setting. It’s important to be mindful that cultural norms in his ethnic background may cause barriers in therapy or act as reasons why his emotional problems are presented in a therapeutic setting. In Arab culture, family commitment and interdependence among family members is strongly emphasized, and seeking treatment for mental health problems can be considered disgraceful (Sue and Sue, 2015, pgs. 5-6). Suhail has
SIGNATURE ASSIGNMENT 4 turned his back on this cultural norm by expressing his current struggles to his therapist, who was originally assigned to assess him for ADHD accommodations. It is noted that the session with the therapist was Suhail’s first time disclosing his struggles with someone else. Personal problems are often only discussed with close family or friends, and having these discussions with someone outside of their circle such as a mental professional can be seen as problematic (Sue and Sue, 2015, pg. 5). This culture tends to be collectivistic, as an individual’s success or failure is reflected in the entire family. The individual’s personal responsibility for their family could sometimes lead to increased stress and anxiety. According to Sue and Sue (2015, pg. 5), Arab college students tend to have higher rates of social anxiety, which is resulted from internalized norms of social responsibility for their actions. Suhail is currently a college student displaying signs of anxiety due to his personal struggles. Suhail has openly discussed with the therapist about his homosexual tendencies and questioning his gender identity. It’s important to be culturally aware that coming out is more difficult for ethnic minorities who already face the stigma for already being a minority (Sue and Sue, 2015). Factors such as ethnicity and spirituality beliefs should be considered. In Suhail’s culture, expressing your gender and sexual identity in a heteronormative society is stigmatized and can result in major consequences not only within the family but also in the society they were raised in. Law and Ethics During the intake assessment, Suhail was assured that anything he disclosed in the therapy session would remain confidential. According to the Code of Ethics from the American Association of Marriage and Family Therapy (n.d.), MFTs shall respect and protects a client’s right to confidentiality. MFTs must review the circumstances with their clients in which
