Throughout history, careers have been formed and developed based on social needs. What began as a hunter, gatherer, or dependent has completely transformed over time, and our needs have changed, requiring the career field to broaden (Walden University, 2019). The career field is now globalized and more complex. We have thousands of career choices. For this discussion post, I will discuss two stages of development that provided major contributions and significant progress in career counseling, their impacts on my future career as a counselor, and my opinion regarding the extent to which multicultural populations have been considered throughout the changes. Major Contributions to the Development of Career Counseling The first stage of development that I believe had a significant impact on the overall development of career counseling is the fourth stage, which focused on the initiatives federal and state agencies took to integrate career counseling (Pope, 2000). This stage included the introduction of multiple federal legislations and social programs that focused on the importance of career development. The second stage I chose was the sixth stage, specifically the development of private practices (Pope, 2000). This After reading and watching this week's resources, I have a better understanding of career counseling and how it has developed over time. This will directly impact my work as a counselor. As of right now, my goal is to work with teens. Although I want to work in private or public practice and focus on mental health, I know that career counseling will be helpful and crucial at times. The ultimate goal is obviously helping
future clients identify long-term goals and make changes or put plans into place to get to where they want to be. Multicultural Considerations in the Development of Career Counseling Throughout the stages of development, the main focus was societal considerations, such as changes made. An example would be how stage one addressed the upheaval regarding poverty and substandard living conditions and providing jobs specifically for soldiers returning from World War I (Pope, 2000). However, stage 6 provided a major shift towards multicultural considerations and I believe this will be a continuing development. As a future counselor, it will be imperative that I am knowledgeable about diversity and multiculturalism so that I can serve my clients to the best of my ability. I need to be aware of the cultural barriers they face so that I can advocate for their equal treatment and opportunity. Conclusion The history of career counseling includes multiple stages of development. Each stage involved changes necessary to meet the needs of our ever-evolving society. Two developmental stages that played a significant role were in stage 4, the involvement of federal legislation, the implementation of social programs, and the development of specializations developed by private practitioners within the field, which caused a shift in focus towards multicultural populations (Pope, 2000) References Pope, M. (2000). A brief history of career counseling in the United States. The Career
