° Diego Ramos Initial Post: I will be analyzing social problem 1.2, which enhances the rights of children who are sexually assaulted in a school setting. The person who is defining the problem is LCSW, executive director of the rape treatment center in Santa Monica, Ms. Gail Abarbanel. This social worker turned to her connections in the assembly and fought for legislation drafted to establish rights for children who have been sexually assaulted in the school setting (Jansson, 2018). The initial incident included Jennifer, a 12-year-old girl attending a middle school in Los Angeles. After being raped by another student, she was denied the same rights that the accused student had, which included the right to counsel or to even have a parent present during the questioning. This was unjust! According to the NASW core values, this scenario exhibited multiple values but can be focused mainly on service & dignity and the worth of a person (NASW, 2021). For example, the service value can be identified as the primary goal being to help people in need and to address social problems. In this scenario, the social worker knew that she wanted to create change so that children who in the future may experience this unfortunate situation can have rights and be able to get justice in a proceedings case. The value of dignity and worth of a person can be identified as the social workers respecting the inherent dignity and worth of the person. In this scenario, we can vividly see that the social worker did not ignore the problem because it was a closed case but ensured that any other child would not be retraumatized, like how they retraumatized Jennifer by having her relive her assault. I think that the social problem has been worked on very well. However, there was no information given as to what age or grade the child could be in before the parent was allowed, nor did they cover any additional accommodations that others may need. This includes potential children with disabilities or children who may not speak the native English language or may be in fear of authority figures such as the police. I say this because recent research depicted that many individuals do not report abuse because they are in fear of authority figures and that they might not be believed (Murphy-Oikonen, 2022).
