Name: Module 5 Assignment
Instructions
Follow the instructions for Problem Set 1
and Problem Set 2
. Use SPSS to complete steps 1, 2, and 3, then use your SPSS Output and Graphs to complete step 4. Paste the required information in the spaces indicated in this document for steps 1, 2, and 3. Fill in the blanks of the template paragraph in step 4. Be sure to use your values and labels as discussed in your learning materials.
Problem Set 1
Instructions for Problem Set 1
Read the problem set information and data below, then complete steps 1, 2, and 3 using SPSS. From your data, complete step 4. A health psychologist is interested in the relationship between the region of United States a person was raised
and number of siblings. That is, does the region of the US where a person was born relate to their number of siblings. He randomly samples 30 participants at a local airport asking them what area of the U.S. they were raised (East or West).
The researcher recorded that 15 were born in the East part of the U.S. and 15 were born in the West part of the U.S.
He then asks each participant how many siblings, not counting themselves, each has in their family. The number of siblings is listed as numeric values in the data below.
East: 1, 3, 2, 4, 2, 1, 3, 2, 1, 2, 0, 5, 3, 0, 4
West: 0, 2, 4, 4, 5, 3, 4, 4, 3, 3, 4, 5, 5, 5, 0
TIP: You CANNOT enter the data exactly as it is shown here. You need to do something involving a condition column and values in variable view in SPSS to set up the data for the correct t-test.
Step 1: SPSS Data and Variable View
1.
Enter the data into SPSS in Data view.
2.
Complete the following five tasks in Variable view: a.
Name the variables.
b.
Set the number of decimal places to match the data.
c.
Label the variables.
d.
Enter values IF it is a categorical variable.
e.
Set the measure.
3.
Snip/export both Data View and Variable View from SPSS.
4.
Paste Data View here:
5.
Paste Variable View here:
Step 2: SPSS Output
1.
Based on the research scenario, determine whether you should run an Independent-Samples t
-test OR a Related/Paired-Samples t
-test.
2.
Run the t
-test you determined best fits the research scenario.
a.
Include all options used in the example video.
b.
Use a two-tailed test (SPSS’s default) with a 0.05 alpha level.
3.
Snip/export the output from SPSS.
4.
Paste the output here:
Step 3: SPSS Bar Graph
1.
Based on the research scenario, determine the correct type of bar graph to run.
2.
In SPSS, create the type of bar graph you determined best fits the research scenario. 3.
Include the following settings:
a.
Y-axis starts at 0.
b.
Title both the X & Y-axis based on the scenario.
c.
Title both bars on the X-axis based on the scenario.
d.
Include error bars.
e.
Do not include a title above the graph.
4.
Snip/export the graph from SPSS.
5.
Paste the graph here:
Step 4: Results
1.
Based on the research scenario, select the correct APA write-up paragraph from the paragraph options below.
Note: If you select the Independent-Samples paragraph, modify the second sentence as noted if your t-
test indicates no significant difference.
Option 1: Independent Samples t
-test paragraph
An independent-samples t
-test was conducted on mean DV as a function of IDENTIFY THE IV (
n
= __). A
significant difference was found t(df)
= ___, p
= ___, r
= ___. Interpret finding, whether significant or not (
M
= ____, SD
= ____ for IV level 1, M
= ___, SD
= ___ for IV level 2). OR, if p < .05, the second sentence should read
“No significant difference was found t(df)
= ___, p
= ___, r
= ___.
Option 2: Related/Paired-Samples t
-test paragraph
A paired samples t
-test was conducted to examine the effect of give details about the 2 conditions (
N
=
__). The results indicate that describe pattern of results, citing (
M
= , SD
= ) FOR BOTH CONDITIONS, t(df)
= ___, p
= ___, r
= ___. 2.
Fill in the blanks and replace any guiding information on the write-up paragraph you determined best fits the research scenario. As you complete your selected paragraph, be sure to follow these guidelines:
n and degrees of freedom are reported as whole numbers.
t
, r
, M
, and SD are rounded and reported to two decimal places.
p is reported to three decimal places. o
Only exception: when SPSS reads p = “.000” o
Then, you should type p < .001 NOTE: Nothing should be underlined in your write ups. The underlining in the template paragraphs represent blank places that should be filled in with information.
3.
Paste the completed APA write-up paragraph here:

Design the main hill of your roller coaster by deciding how tall and wide you
want it to be. Keep in mind that the tallest roller coaster in the world was built in
2005 and is 456 feet tall. Engineers have had difficulty building one taller than
that due to safety concerns and passenger comfort.
Once you have decided on its specifications, determine the rule that represents
the third section of your roller coaster.
You should submit the following here:
1. A graph of your first three sections and meets the following requirements.
• This is drawn neatly on the graph area provided in your Lesson
Companion or on graph paper scaled similarly.
• You have labeled the ordered pairs that represent the beginning and end
of each of these three sections.
• You have labeled the highest point of the roller coaster you have so far
designed.
