SPSS Statistics Lab Exercise 14.1 1. What is the level of measurement for the variable MADEDUC? Scale 2. What is the level of measurement for variable EDUC? Nominal 3. Pearson’s r for MADEDUC and EDUC is .347 while r^2 is .120. .347 x .347 = 0.12 R^2 = 12% 4. Would you characterize the relationship between these two variables as weak, moderate, or strong? Explain. I would consider the relationship between these variables as weak with a positive association. The reason being that the value is above zero and closer to it than to the value of +1. 5. What proportion of the variation in EDUC can be explained by the variation in MAEDUC? 12% 6. What is the level of measurement for the variable EDUC? Scale 7. What is the level of measurement for the variable TVHOURS? Scale 8. What is the regression equation for EDUC and TVHOURS? Y = 14.436 + (12x - .205) 9. What is the direction of the relationship between the variables?
NEGATIVE – As years of education increase, does the number of hours of television watched increase or decrease? DECREASE 10. The relationship of the “dots” or cases to the regression line suggests what about the strength of the relationship between the two variables? I would consider the strength of the relationship to be moderate. The reason being that the slope of the line isn’t very steep, and the dots (cases) are spread up. If the dots were closer to the line, then that would indicate a perfect relationship. 11. Produce a correlation matrix with Pearson’s r, excluding cases pairwise. Then further describe the strength of the relationship between EDUC and TVHOURS by noting what the value of Pearson’s r is and whether the relationship is weak, moderate, or strong. Pearson’s r: .201 Relationship: Would be moderate
