Name: Brady Spence Date: P409 Lab 6: VO 2 max Turn In: Lab #6 data sheets Points: Lab participation and data sheets 5 pts Lab assignment questions Lab assignment 20 pts Overview Students will observe VO 2 max tests Each of the two subjects will perform essentially the same testing protocol (1/2 wattage increases when close to max for males) o The subjects will have different training histories and fitness levels, so that we can compare VO 2 between them. o Calculate age-predicted maximal HR using Tanaka equation: HR = 208 - (0.7 * age) o Once RPE 15 is hit, subsequent stage times will be halved from 2 minutes to 1 minute (HR and RPE will be collected every minute instead of every 2 minutes) Subject Name: Zach Age: 21 Training History/Fitness Level: APMHR: 193.3 Secondary max criteria check-off (2 / 3 = max was likely hit): ≥95% APMHR _ 183.635 ___ RPE ≥18 ____ Pedal Rate < 50___ Stage Number Time Power (W) VO 2 (ml/kg/min) Heart rate (bpm) RPE RER Warm-Up 0:30 50 5.98 138 6 1.22 1:00 9.41 1.03 1 1:30 100 13.51 144 9 .78 2:00 19.42 .76 2:30 18.31 .84 3:00 22.61 .87 2 3:30 150 22.46 138 11 .92 4:00 24.69 .92 4:30 24.24 .94 5:00 29.78 .94 3 5:30 200 225 32.53 150 144 14 15 .99 6:00 35.96 .99 6:30 36.57 1.04 7:00 39.83 1.05 4 7:30 250 275 43.14 150 17 1.09 8:00 47.57 1.09 8:30 49.51 1.14 9:00 51.29 1.19 5 9:30 52.69 10:00 10:30 11:00 6 11:30 12:00 12:30 13:00 7 13:30

In Lab Questions 1. Did the subjects reach VO 2 max? (Justify your answer based on the data.) Zach hit his VO2 max where we see the value rise then hit a plateau. In Domenica’s data during class, we never saw her reach that plateau indicating that she never actually got all the way to her max VO2. As stated by herself, Domenica quit early and could’ve gone longer but she was already fatigued earlier in the today from lifting in another class prior to taking her VO2 max. Also, Zach’s breathing was deeper and better than Domenica, she was talking prior to her test and was laughing so this could’ve messed up her rhythm and or the results early in the protocol. 2. Was there a difference in VO 2 max between the subjects? If so, what factors might explain this difference? Yes, there was a difference in VO2 max with Zach’s being higher at 52.69 ml/kg/min while Domenica has a VO2 max of 34.16 ml/kg/min. Some factors that can affect this are that Domenica mentioned doing bench, deadlift, and squat in another class before taking this test, so fatigue could’ve played a role. Based off of looks, it is noticeable that Zach is in a lot better shape and more physically active and fit than Domenica. Zach is also 21 years old while Domenica is 32 so that too could play a role in VO2 max. 3. How did the pattern of change in heart rate compare with that of VO 2 ? What might explain any similarities/differences? Heart rate and VO2max have a well-established, nearly linear relationship when we exercise; but, at lower heart rates, this relationship becomes non-linear. Working out close to your maximal heart rate is the best way to raise your Vo2 max. Zach has a higher maximal heart rate and therefore can perform at a higher level when exercising and can push a little longer and a little harder than Domenica. Zach was able to maintain a lower heart rate for a longer period during this test allowing himself to get to a higher intensity than Dominica was able to reach. Zach reached 250 Watts and Domenica reached 150 Watts.
