Academic integrity is the code of academic conduct that is set forth by educational institutions. It is the catalyst for the mission of most institutions. The expectation is that students will be honest and responsible as it pertains to academia. It defines the academic rigor in research and academic publishing and gives value to the institution (Spain & Robes, 2011). Academic integrity also applies to the way that an individual behaves both personally and professionally, and is a true measure to the worth of the degree that is earned. Cheating used to be considered an unmentionable sin. However, in this day and age, it has become more common and somewhat of a daily occurrence. Cheating is more widespread today than in the past. According to the article titled Education: The New Morality, cheating has not been an issue of values, but simply one of practicality. This shows that many view cheating as a mere occurrence and something that can often be skipped over. The reason cheating has become such a pervasive movement is because many students tend to rationalize their cheating behavior. Multiple studies have found that students are spending less time on their academic studies leading to a decrease in education and an increase in temptation of academic dishonesty.  Cheating has been prevalent since mankind existed, but writer William Chace gives his outlook on the issue in his article, “A Question of Honor”. Chace is able to use adequate reasoning to engage the reader in an article that depicts perspectives from every angle. Included within the article are a sense of sympathy, through explanations and even a proposed solution of how to end academic dishonesty.

A poll conducted by a website, CollegeHumor, revealed that 60 percent of college students had admitted to cheating on tests and assignments. Due to its popularity, society has began to accept cheating as an average tool used by students to succeed. Accepting the issue of cheating has not only decreased society’s standards, but also has led them to become less ethical. Thus, as a result of the decrease in standards, academic cheating has become a reaccuring problem that is now being accepted by society.

Solution of cheating culture is honor codes and techniques for academic integrity which are important parts of the solution. It is the responsibility of students as well as faculty and administration to establish an environment where honest students do not feel that they are at risk or disadvantage. “Just as cheating can become normalized at a school, so too can academic integrity efforts move the pendulum in the other direction and create a climate where cheating is not cool” (Callahan, 2005). “Integrity is doing the right thing, even when no one is watching.” C.S. Lewis. The notion of honesty and integrity is also depicted in the debate of the honor code in schools all around the country. In the article the author illustrates the pros and cons of the honor code and the importance of it. The ability to be content while taking a test, us having all knowledge in our pockets and students violating honor code and not getting caught are reasons why we should maintain our honor code. Therefore, the honor code should be maintained because there are many students violating the honor code and getting away with it and this is detrimental to society because students are cheating their way through elementary, middle, high school and maybe even college and not really learning anything that’ll actually take them to the next level.

Many argue over the morals of academic dishonesty. Eugene Bratek writes his thoughts and opinions in his article, “Moving From Cheating to Academic Dishonesty”. In his article, the author writes of occasions of cheating in prevalent schools and how as a community, people can spend less time blaming others and more time building a community of trust. Bratek is completely correct in his writings of ending cheating and becoming an honest community. Bratek points to the fact that cheating and “cutting corners” are making good grades difficult to obtain in the long run.

Academic integrity is the ethical code or moral policy that included avoidance of cheating or plagiarism. Upholding academic integrity includes honestly and rigor in research. There are many other violations for academic integrity. Also guidelines to help maintain academic integrity.

Academic Integrity is significant to the University because we came to school to not only learn education but to learn moral things for the future. Education is very important, but if we do not obtain moral concept we could hardly follow the right path when we graduate from school to be a crew of society; therefore, University should educate people who disobeyed the rule of Academic Integrity and correct their behavior.

The principle of academic integrity stretches beyond the limits of a classroom. Good students are honest with themselves, their professors, their roommates, and their community.

Cheating is defined in the dictionary as, to deceive by trickery; swindle, however the dictionary fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. I intend to show the different beliefs, from different perspectives of people, and also intend on proving which beliefs have the strongest and weakest arguments.

When referring to the concept of cheating, there are many definitions that a person may think of. According to Dictionary.com, there are three ways of viewing the term and thus three corresponding definitions. Nevertheless, the unified theme in the idea of cheating is the use of fraud, deception, and dishonesty (Random House Dictionary). Unfortunately, this is a notion that is continually acknowledged as acceptable. One scenario that is commonly concentrated on is the act of cheating in education.

McCabe has said that an estimated seventy percent of college students have admitted to some type of cheating. He supports this claim by saying that the parties to blame here is the school system and the media. HBU defines academic dishonesty to when a student cheats or steals someone’s work and passes it as their own among these are a list of actions that count for academic dishonesty. Some examples being brought up about dishonesty is how in the NFL saw past the deflating incident in the Super Bowl were it seems like the media praised the player for his actions (Loschiavo). Therefor, students think it is correct to do be dishonest in their class work.

Why do students often show a deficit of integrity in school? A large number of students don't have the time to study because teachers assign a lot of practice homework that eats up their time after school. Also, parents sometimes pressure their children too much to get straight A’s, which leads to students cheating on tests. In this century, the internet has become a great place for students to plagiarize from. Student workload, parental pressure, and the availability of technology, are to blame for the lack of integrity among students, which shows that students today are overwhelmed by the expectations placed on them by society.
