Where education is no longer unique and special in the society that only wealthy family uses, but it becomes a very mundane to the world where everyone can go to school; and this bring academic integrity into the world. Cheating is an act of dishonest and deceiving of its own work, where copying or stealing from others ideas and work is fine. Many times, the act of cheating felt like it’s okay to do so, because it really isn’t a big deal to ourselves and to others. But the idea of cheating itself is completely wrong and not acceptable, because if it continues to grow throughout time, the outcome and consequences is unthinkable. The expectation is that students will be honest and responsible as it pertains to academia. Multiple studies have found that students are spending less time on their academic studies leading to a decrease in education and an increase in temptation of academic dishonesty. Cheating has been prevalent since mankind existed, but writer William Chace gives his outlook on the issue in his article, “A Question of Honor”. Chace is able to use adequate reasoning to engage the reader in an article that depicts perspectives from every angle. Included within the article are a sense of sympathy, through explanations and even a proposed solution of how to end academic dishonesty.
A poll conducted by a website, CollegeHumor, revealed that 60 percent of college students had admitted to cheating on tests and assignments. Due to its popularity, society has began to accept cheating as an average tool used by students to succeed. In the article the author illustrates the pros and cons of the honor code and the importance of it. The ability to be content while taking a test, us having all knowledge in our pockets and students violating honor code and not getting caught are reasons why we should maintain our honor code. Therefore, the honor code should be maintained because there are many students violating the honor code and getting away with it and this is detrimental to society because students are cheating their way through elementary, middle, high school and maybe even college and not really learning anything that’ll actually take them to the next level.
Many argue over the morals of academic dishonesty. Eugene Bratek writes his thoughts and opinions in his article, “Moving From Cheating to Academic Dishonesty”. In his article, the author writes of occasions of cheating in prevalent schools and how as a community, people can spend less time blaming others and more time building a community of trust. Academic Integrity is significant to the University because we came to school to not only learn education but to learn moral things for the future. Education is very important, but if we do not obtain moral concept we could hardly follow the right path when we graduate from school to be a crew of society; therefore, University should educate people who disobeyed the rule of Academic Integrity and correct their behavior.
The principle of academic integrity stretches beyond the limits of a classroom. Good students are honest with themselves, their professors, their roommates, and their community.
Cheating is defined in the dictionary as, to deceive by trickery; swindle, however the dictionary fails to tell you if it is right or wrong to cheat. People have many different beliefs when it comes to cheating; some think its fine to do while others completely disapprove. Why do students often show a deficit of integrity in school? A large number of students don't have the time to study because teachers assign a lot of practice homework that eats up their time after school. Also, parents sometimes pressure their children too much to get straight A’s, which leads to students cheating on tests. In this century, the internet has become a great place for students to plagiarize from. Student workload, parental pressure, and the availability of technology, are to blame for the lack of integrity among students, which shows that students today are overwhelmed by the expectations placed on them by society.
