A life changing event within my family several years ago influenced my interest in the pharmaceutical field and my desire to attend Shenandoah University’s School of Pharmacy. At the age of 6, my sister was hospitalized for two months. I was 7 at the time. It was a difficult and frightening time for my family and me as my sister was fighting rheumatic fever. This disease caused inflammation and holes in her heart. Throughout the duration of her hospitalization, doctors were constantly working to help her recover by doing a variety of tasks, such as checking her pulse, examining her, and conducting a variety of tests. One experience that focused my general interests of science, math, and health to pharmacy is working at CVS. This job strengthened my interest for wanting to work in the healthcare field. By working as a pharmacy technician, I am able to gain experience working in the pharmacy and having greater understanding of retail pharmacy. I enjoy helping patients and being knowledgeable on a variety of medications.
I believe it would be a great experience to be involved in the creation of medications that could significantly help people, like how similar medicines helped my sister. Being a part of the pharmaceutical research industry would be a suitable alternative for me as it would allow me to be involved with patients and their health, indirectly, especially since I am not fond of blood or needles. After graduating, I desire to go into the research and developmental field of medications or work as a clinical pharmacist in a hospital. Being in this field would allow me to make an impact in other families’ lives like how the doctors were able to make an impact in my family’s. I also plan to minor in Spanish. Minoring in Spanish would allow me to communicate with more people and grant me access to additional opportunities. This means knowing Spanish would be a great skill. I would be able to maintain my language skills with daily use, communicating with a wider spectrum of people. This would allow me to reach a greater number of patients and overcome the language barrier. It would also allow me to have a deeper sense of culture and diversity. Although I am continuing to develop my Spanish language skills, I am still able to effectively communicate with Spanish-speaking patients. This makes it easier to assist them and provide the best care for them. Because the U.S. is rapidly becoming bilingual, I would have more job opportunities. Spanish has grown to be the second language of the United States. Many companies are looking to hire bilingual individuals, especially since most are expanding internationally.
