The process of aging is a biological process. However, someone being considered ‘young’, ‘middle-aged’ or ‘old’ (the three main age spans) is perceived differently by divergent cultures, therefore it is considered a social construct. This essay will not only examine the three characteristics of age, particularly ‘young’ and ‘old’, but also it will come to a conclusion in relation to the essay question outlined above.

The process of aging is a biological/social process. In contrary, varying cultures and people interpret ages (‘young’, ‘middle aged’ and ‘old’) very differently due to the world’s diverse age markers. For example, in Japan, the average life expectancy of a man is 80 years old and a woman is 87 years old, as stated by the World Health Organization (Anon., 2014), which means that men and women are not considered ‘old’ until they are in their seventies or eighties. However, in Sierra Leone, the average life expectancy of a man is 47.5 years old and a woman is 48 years old, which means that people in the age range of thirty to forty would be considered ‘old’ or ‘middle-aged’. The difference in people’s perceptions on who would be considered old and who wouldn’t shows that conceptions on adolescence and age in general are examples of a cultural construction; there is no set age across the world for what is old and what is young.
